Why is Christ's bodily death a satisfactory substitute for the death of the soul in hell?

Does scripture give any indication as to why Christ's physical execution on the cross was seen as a satisfactory substitution for an eternity in hell for all humanity? Even from the sinless and perfect Christ, physical death doesn't seem, to me at least, match up with the severity of eternal damnation.

Because it is seen and understood to be the greatest sacrifice one can give, and because it is the fulfillment

In Genesis, that voice in Abrahams head told him to sacrifice his only son Isaac so as to prove his faith in It. Isaac asked Abraham where the sacrifice was and Abraham replied "God will provide his own sacrifice"... as Abraham was about to prove himself by slaying his only son, a voice came out of heaven and told him to stop, then a lamb appeared trapped in a bush as the sacrifice. God said that because of Abrahams faith, He would use his family's lineage to bless the whole world. Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of that promise.

How do so many people not know this?

Souls don't go to Hades, that's Greek Paganism.

Jesus Christ came to conquer the power of death itself. The Word put fourth in Genesis is "the soul that sins shall surely die"... Jesus did not fall under that law. He is the Son of God. By willingly going himself into that state He gains power over it to bring others back no matter how far gone.

It's thought that Adam, Eve, and the ancient "Sons of God" were immortal in the "garden" before error (sin) entered their being. The book of Revelation concludes with a return to that state.

"Atoning sacrifice" does not equal our replacement just because the word "for" is used. A bag of flour could be used as an atonement sacrifice (Lev. 5) for unintentional sins, and no one would think the bag of flour was replacing the sinner?
