No they were not. You seem to think that being a conservative means that you dont believe in changing anything, and because the Republicans wanted to change slavery and discrimination that they are liberal. But that's wrong, we believe in changing injustice, just as the original conservative Union loving Republicans did also.

The republican party was founded in 1854 by opponents of the Kansas–Nebraska Act, which allowed for the potential expansion of slavery into certain U.S. territories. The party supported classical liberalism, opposed the expansion of slavery, and supported economic reform. Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president. Under the leadership of Lincoln and a Republican Congress, slavery was banned in the United States in 1865. The Party was generally dominant during the Third Party System and the Fourth Party System. After 1912, the Party underwent an ideological shift to the right.

Joseph R. Fornieri; Sara Vaughn Gabbard (2008).
James G. Randall; Lincoln the Liberal Statesman (1947).

The first comment in the comment section examples the 1964 vote. You might want to read it or you can read this article with charts of the info.
Geography had more to do with how the vote went down than party affiliation.
Old Confederate states, those south of the Mason Dixon Line, and the Union states north of that line determined how they voted.

Virtually every southern Republican voted Nay and only one Democrat vote Yea, in both the House and the Senate.
In the north, a larger percentage of Democrats voted Yea than Republicans in both the Senate and the House.

Were Republicans really the party of civil rights in the 1960s? | Harry J Enten

How is anyone silenced in America,...
Does being fired from your job, harassed and threatened by Antifa types, expelled from school, and even charged with a crime for so much as speaking an unapproved word or pointing a finger or making someone else "feel uncomfortable" because they don't care for your conservative beliefs COUNT????

Need answers, what I am seeing from you are ignorance and lacking American history knowledge. You do not pay any attention to politics at all if you have no clue which party did what both historically and in the 21st century. Thank you for starting this thread; it will help you better understand what the parties really have done recently, believe, and do today.

First things first, Republicans are the ones who want voter suppression. They say it is to save money, but if you look closely, it is clear this only happens to prevent liberals from voting. Democrats know what this really accomplishes and are right to claim Republicans violate the Voting Rights Act. Freedom of speech is exercised when we vote, so Republicans are hindering the First Amendment right to speak our minds.

It would take me quite a while to name the hundreds or thousands of those people, but all the actions described are bona fide examples and are not isolated ones, either.

I dont believe that Trump or any politicians are the best people in the world, but i do believe that someone has to stand against these liberal socialists. These so called democrats want our guns, our freedom of speech and our money. The biggest problem is how they try to silence pro gun and pro life people, and anyone who stands in their way. That's not very democratic is it?

what would Jesus say about your concerns about guns and money?

Conservatism just fits well with Christianity and hence why I support it. The direction of liberalism today is clearly towards the secular, to the detriment of the Christian religion for the common good. Liberal Christians don't seem to understand that they by their politics they undermine it's public exercise and make Christianity essentially powerless in it's impact on culture and living. Christianity to the Liberal must always be private, never public.

The Republicans or any conservative party in any western country aren't doing what I would like them to do, but supporting them is the better alternative to the outright destructive forces of the socialist/secular left. Trump, despite his imperfections is furthering the pro-life movement more than any other establishment Republican has done that I can remember. His nationalism will also help to preserve what America is, rather than destroy and rebuild it in some other image.

Gun control, freedom of speech and whether or not a society is 'democratic' seem less important to me. The Republicans, if they ever achieve a cultural hegemony like Democratic liberals have, will try to censor their opponents as well. The Republicans I couldn't imagine moving away from a pro-second amendment stance but I could still see them placing restrictions on buying/selling guns. The biggest problem with conservative politicians is that they seem to always be retreating and once they've retreated and a new neutral has been created the left attacks again only for them to retreat. It happened with homosexual marriage as an example and what is conservatism if we can't even preserve or advocate for it's morality?

The FIRST black Supreme Court Justice (Thurgood Marshall) was appointed by Democrats. The FIRST Hispanic Supreme Court Justice was placed by Obama.

All of the current women on the Supreme Court were placed by Democrats, ... though the FIRST woman was placed by Reagan.
Try to cultivate a sense of history ...

History is politically-incorrect as far as conservatives are concerned.

Whats wrong with guns? They save lives. Why would i want to give my money to pro abortion liberals? Would Jesus support that?

In fact, there were democrats and republicans on both sides of the civil rights movement. On one side, opposing protection for minority voters, were conservatives. On the other side, advocating civil rights laws, were liberals.

It's still that way.

Racists fled the democrat party, and liberals and minorities fled the republican party. Just that simple.
