  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why do you believe in God?

This must be possibly the most-asked question many of you come across on here, but I mean it sincerely. I am currently an agnostic, so I can sway either way, but for every point that argues in God's favour, 10 seem to spring up against it. So I'd like to hear your reasons, and perhaps you can persuade me or get a debate started.

I look at the complexity of the world around me and see the hand of a creator everywhere. To me with the things I interact with everyday made by man, how could something like the universe just happened?

There are many reasons to believe in God, and primarily because of ETERNITY. You have an eternal soul and it will dwell with the Creator-God in Heaven or cast into Hell for eternal condemnation. Don't mess with God and presume to be His equal and know what is best!

As others have told you, this world and the universe makes a Creator evident, and if you reject that then His Word will not satisfy you. You are then left to your own reasoning and that will be fatal I am sure by all logic, God's Word, creation evidence, and the millions of souls that have trusted Him through the ages.

Consider this:

HOW HOPE MATTERS
Contemplating Judgment

If you walked on earth in heavenly hope
And was quite settled in your bliss;
What would it matter if death is the end
And you then left the world like this?

If you lived your days with faith in God's Son
And had peace and joy at the last;

Could it matter at all if hope should fail
And there's nothing when life is past?

If you disallow God, His love and truth
As the Bible truly does tell;
Should that matter now as you ponder life
If your end might sadly be hell?

If you miss heaven's joy and all that's good
And you find the Bible was true;
If you die so soon and know not God's Son,
What will it then matter to you?

MY FRIEND,

i believe in God because He has proven His Love towards me 100 times over. He has lifted me out of darkness when I was His enemy, brought me into His light, and turned my life around 180 degrees, creating a loving human being out of a worthless pile of excrement.

i suggest you stop trying to get other people to "sway" you towards Abba. God is more eager to form a relationship with you than i bet you are panting for one with Him. Get your butt off the fence, get down on your knees, and make His acquaintance.

Well, before I accepted Christ I had an inward conscience warning me when I was about to go awry, which I often ignored much to my sorrow. This thing we call a conscience is evidence, albeit relatively weak evidence, of the existance of God.

On the subjective side... Once I accepted Christ, I had a new inward voice that guided me more clearly, and more often. Through reading and believing God's Word I gained a new inner sense of peace. Also, I had a tremendous inner clean pure light feeling that rose up from the depths of my soul and gave me joy unspeakable, something I had never experienced before my faith in Christ... and believe me I tried through drugs to feel good, and what I experienced through faith in Jesus put every drug I ever tried to shame.

On the objective side, I found evolution (biological, chemical, stellar, cosmic, etc.) to be wanting in it's answers to some tough questions. There is some evidence for all kinds of evolution (with the possible exception of chemical evolution), but there were just too many holes, unanswered questions, and explanations that failed the smell test. I looked at the universe, life, and my own soul and came to the conclusion that evolution simply did not answer for me. The Bible offers an explanation for everything that satisfied me, even though it did not always line up with what science would lead me to believe. Fulfilled prophecy, the changed lives of the apostles (not to mention the thousands throughout history that we have documentation of), lent credence to the fact of Christ's resurrection.

In the end, because of all the above, I am left with a faith in God that surpasses simply believing Him to exist, and reaches to the experience of knowing that He does. Some of this reasoning/experience happened before I came to faith, but even more of it came to me after I took that leap of faith and believed unto salvation. I don't think you can reason yourself into the kingdom of heaven, but your reason can take you to a point where you are willing to take the leap of faith if you truly want to.

Hope this helps;
Mike

Haha, I'm not too sure God wants me to sway to ABBA, but some of their music is quite good I suppose?

For those of you who look at the Earth and see evidence of design, remember that most of what you see has come about over millions of years of changing landscape and evolution. Why does the Universe exist? If God was only going to create life on one planet, why make all the other useless stars and planets that will never be capable of supporting life? Think about how alone we are in the Universe, how many billions upon billions of galaxies surround us for millions of light years in every direction but not a trace of life? Why would God create that? Surely it's easier to believe that we came about by astronomically unlikely chance?

Everything we see in space is light years in the past. I pray that as many of us will by the grace of God will know what this is all about in the hope of our salvation.

MY FRIENDS,

i, and many other Christians, belief that the Universe is teaming with God-created lifeforms as God indeed creates nothing without a purpose.

Incidentally, abba is ABBA as in Romans 8:15.

Ok, can you please tell me what any of that has to do with the possibility of God's existence?

Is god a man or a woman or a descriptive term for an entity for which we know nothing about?

MY FRIEND,

"GOD" is a term for some-ONE many of us know very well. Given that God is spirit and not material, He possess neither a penis nor a vagina. He is referred to as "He" because because His actions towards us, His creatures, find their closest approximation in the functioning of loving earthly fathers.

So that's pretty much saying he's man, and that men are more important than women.

MY FRIEND,

i assume that you are an atheist making a silly comment like that. Can there be fathers without mothers? Which is more important, the sperm or the egg?

Sperm and eggs are equally important, though less eggs are produced than sperm so it could be said that eggs are more important because they are rarer.

What I'm saying is that the actions of God on Earth are not specifically adhering to the traits of just a mother or Father. How can God really have a gender if we are all made in his image?

So why refer to this ''thing'' as a he? If he wants me to accept and love ''him'' then why do I have so many options? After years of searching I see no proof of an existence of a ''god'' so why should I believe? Surely he should speak to me directly.

The proof is all around you, just let Jesus into your heart and you will understand.
