I became a Christian because I'm convinced it's the truth. As for why to become a Christian (besides that first reason), one should become a Christian if they wish to 1) have communion with God and 2) avoid separation from God.

Because loving God and people makes life meaningful, and a meaningless life is intolerable,
And if a person is sorry before God that they have not loved as they should, and they want to be forgiven,
And if a person sees in Jesus Christ the forgiving and renewing love of God,
And if a person wants the spirit of Christ to rule their heart, and give them a new way of being in the world--
Then Christianity makes sense.

I suppose it comes down to wanting a person, Jesus Christ, more than rules or techniques. It would require taking seriously the idea that the person recorded in the New Testament can presently guide your life. But the first thing, and the foundation of everything else, is the Gospel: God's gratuitous clemency to sinners in Jesus Christ. You have to know that forgiveness is your greatest need in order to believe in Jesus Biblically and walk humbly and mercifully in the world as his disciple.

Nice post, Mr. Coffee.

Hello, Analog.

The one thing I keep realizing over and over is the incredible peace knowing God brings to my life. I can't imagine not knowing God. For one minute, forget about what you "know" about being a Christian from watching other Christians and/or by what you hear in the media. Other Christians are NOT our ruler, guideline or measure as to what it means to be a Christian.

It is fulfiilling, loving, compassionate, peaceful, eye-opening assurance. Deep down, we all know and realize we don't ultimately "measure up". "If I could do just a little more." "If I volunteer just a touch more." "If I stop doing such and such, my life will be 'good'." Man strives for perfection, but never finds it; seeks the ultimate good, but never attains it; searches for ultimate truth, but never finds it. God is all these things, and He has gifted that to us.

We will not be perfect here on earth, but God will one day give us a perfect body and let us abide in a perfect world. Until then, this short life is a test of our faith and our devotion to God. Even if we are not the perfect Christian, we know and understand God's perfect gift of grace to us. It is an assurance that cannot be understand unless one has accepted this gift.

It is a treasure beyond measure.

Okay let me get this straight, you would trust a book that was written by MAN,translated to many languages (many errors caused from that) and contradicts itself?

I wouldn't. That's why I believe the Bible.

"But there's contradictions!" I used to believe that, but after awhile of seeing these "contradictions" debunked, I no longer pay attention to these "1000 irrefutable Bible contradictions" sites.

I'll admit that there are some translation and transcription errors (i.e. numbers), but if differences that arise in translation with anything are reason enough to completely invalidate the book, then I hope we do that with everything else. In fact, one can simply say that Darwin's Origin of Species is completely invalidated and wrong simply because when translated into another language, it is not going to be a literal translation, word-for-word. Translations are a bit more complex.

Read the bible again, the word hell isn't even in there.

I've searched the KJV and the NIV and I found "hell" in plenty of places.

The desire to become a Christian should be to know God more and have eternal fellowship with Him, not to avoid damnation. "Hell" is eternal separation from God. I desire eternal fellowship with God.

Well put.

For me it wasn't until I abandoned my ego and opened my heart that Christ came in. I spent a great deal of time away from God because of all the condescending rhetoric that so many Christians spout. If God were a debatable topic the threads on this forum would be much more interesting. Instead I find a lot of Christians telling Atheist that they believe "because"" and Atheists making the same argument in reverse. One side say's, "Can you prove that God doesn't exist?" and the other side counters with, "No, can you prove that he does." Fairly boring in it's lack of intellectual movement.

I'd like to tell a story
For 6 years i lived on a missionary ship in Africa and Europe. In Africa, we would give free sergeries/medical attention/relief/ AND bring developement! I CAN imagine not being a Christian, and solely for this reason:all the people i knew were so afraid of where they would go when they died.....and yet, when i told them(even in my childhood) how to accept Christ, they knew i was right! Seeing my tribal friends come to know Jesus was the best!!!! It was almost like they were just waiting to hear about God, and i was just praying id be able to tell them!

There are many kinds of Christianity. 3 of them are: 1.People who know God, love him, and practice his will DAILY. 2.People who know God, claim to love him, and practice his will on sundays. 3. People who don't know God, don't really care about him, and go to church on holidays.

This is why i do not like what the term christianity HAS BECOME! This is why i prefer follower of Christ, or Believer in Christ.

Do i believe the bible? of course! it is just as i believe that asocrates is real, even though there is more evidence that Jesus is! And it is as believing the Rosetta Stone...yet, do we hesitate to believe these things? Do we condemn the very knowledge to be unintelligent? No.

When the dusk of day has turned to night, and the hopeless many are left behind, even as the wrath of God pours out from the skies, the evil will grasp and the multitude will deny!

Take a minute to ponder the meaning ofyour existence.....question the theories that have become fact in your knowledge.....are these things any better than believing in one god....how about believing in God?

It's your choice, so make it...

To escape God's wrath on the day of judgment. Why should we become Christians? Look into the mirror of God's law, the Ten Commandments and think honestly of how often you have stolen (anything), lied, lusted, coveted, didn't honor your parents, hated...God must punish evil, and He will. But He doesn't want anyone to perish, so He showed His love by sacrificing His Son to take your place in judgment. Why should Christians stay Christians? Because we love God.

Christ is the Word of God made flesh. Because of my basic belief in God, I know that He sent His son to atone for the world's shortcomings (sins), because not a one of us is perfect. God cannot tolerate sin (being in a state not in agreement with Him), but through Christ's sacrifice, He has made us all pure, if we accept the fact He did it (which in turn, we would have to accept that fact that there is a God)

I cannot accept Islam, because it doesn't teach grace, which is what the law hangs on. (Many believe Mohammed believed in the God of Abraham, but had an "encounter" with an angel and was convinced he was the last prophet of God, and wrote, or dictated, what would later become the quran).

I can't believe in Hinduism, because of the polytheism.

Everything in the NT agrees with the OT, from the law to the prophets. One just has to consider that Christ came to write the law on our hearts, not on our minds.

It is the reason we were born. All history is about the revelation of those who will be the firstborn Church (group of people) of God. They will be those who come through the fire of this world's evil and trouble to be His eternal family.
Those who do this are resurrected to new life, overcoming by the blood of the lamb and the word of their testimony - that they have fought the good fight of faith.

Hebrews 12:23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,

Re 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

1Ti 6:12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

Quite simply because when one accepts Jesus as their personal savior anything will and can be accomplished. The "inner peace" that true christians describe to you is for real-this is why so many christians yearn to witness to non-believers-it's as if they have this miracle drug that can take away all your pain, sorrows, and anger and turn it into peace, love, and happiness. How do i know this, because for 35 years i did it my way, and now for the last 8 months i've done it His way. Indescribable is the only word to use. By the way, what seems to be the reason why you wouldn't want these things in your life? Oh, theirs also that part in scripture about the lake of fire that all non-believers are eternally going to be baking in-that's another good reason.
