You believe John knew the answer. So do I. When John used the word "commandments" don't you think it would be advisable to know what HE means?
1 John 2:
3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
1 John 3
16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?
18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him. 20 For if our heart condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things. 21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. 22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. 23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.
Note what "His commandments" are in 1 John 2:3 and 1 John 3:22! Those are His Church!
The commandments of God are about love.
For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. 1 John 5:3
Paul teaches it this way -
Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.
Romans 14:8-10
Key Verse:
if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”
Jesus demonstrated how we are to love God, by loving His children, our neighbor.
He did what He saw His Father do, and said what He heard His Father say.
Jesus demonstrated loving obedience, so we who are called by His name could follow His example.
This is the way of God’s kingdom, to love and serve God by loving and serving His people, His children, our brothers and sisters.
His commandments define how we are to go about this lifestyle.
Most of us who have His Spirit, don’t need to have a list of commandments to show us what we are not supposed to do to our neighbor, however some do.
Those of us who have the Spirit, don’t need a list of commandments, to know that stealing from our neighbor is wrong, and is not how to love our neighbor... but some do.
This can be said of murder, or adultrery or lying, of coveting the things our neighbor has.
Most of us who have His Spirit within us, don’t need to have a list of commandments to know that we are to honor and respect our parents, never the less, some still do.
Paul says it this way -
knowing this: that the law is not made for a righteous person, but for the lawless and insubordinate, for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine, according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust. 1 Timothy 1:9-11
Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. 1 John 3:15
However, we all know the motive behind this thread is not about love or obedience to God, but it’s about gathering for a church service on Saturday rather than Sunday, as if going to church on Saturday somehow overrides the commandment to love our neighbor and obeying the Lord.
If we attend church on Saturday but do not love our neighbor what good does it do?
