  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi everyone,

I've been thinking about checking out an Orhtodox church in my area (Milwaukee, WI, USA) and there are two Greek Orthodox churches the area. I was wondering are they valid Eastern Othodox? Or if anyone knows of other Orthodox churches in the area that would be helpful also. Thanks everybody.

Thanks, God Bless

I think I found the two churches you're talking about--Annunciation and Ss Constantine and Helen, right? Those are both fine. With the different Orthodox churches (Antiochian, Greek, Russian) it's all the same church, same beliefs, and same liturgy. :)

You might find Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church an interesting place to visit, because their building was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright! (I actually had a test on art history yesterday and wrote about that parish for extra credit.)

Definitely try to go to an Orthodox service sometime this coming week because it is our Holy Week, and the services will be very beautiful.

Konstantinos, I think he was referring to the fact that there are "fake" Orthodox churches around - claiming to be Orthodox, but aren't.

How about this one, Erik? http://oca.org/DIRlisting.asp?SID=9&KEY=OCA-MW-MKESCM

The Greek ones would be fine, too - I'm just concerned that the service might be heavily in Greek.

Let us know how it goes!

Hi!

My very personal recommendation is that you try to attend Holy Trinity Church, which is a parish of the Russian Church Abroad. The priest there, Father John Shaw, is a convert himself, quite a scholar, an a priest for a good many years. He's also very accessible, and he'd welcome an e-mail from you anytime! The Services at this parish are celebrated quite beautifully, and Father John is simply a unending well of knowledge, at whose feet one would do well to sit.

The contact information is as follows:

Holy Trinity Church
1136 W. Madison St.
Milwaukee, WI 53204
(414) 383-1477

Father John's e-mail address is: vrevjrs@execjpc.com.

I hope this is helpful!
