The term "fundamentalist" originated with a series of lessons for Sunday School teachers published in the early 20th century. They were largely in response to many going whole hog for the then recently popular trends of evolution, psychology, and Marxism, what today might be called modernism or secularism.
One might see in early Christianity a similar defensive movement when Christianity was periodically persecuted by the Roman government. As a result, a sort of
bunker mentality arouse with trying to keep Christian teaching pure and creeds were formulated and catechetical schools were started.
Today some baptist churches, independent bible churches, and some KJV only churches might still hold fundamentalist views, however, by and large most churches today do not even hold to a view that the bible is literally true.
Most churches today focus on a spiritual experience which fits in with a general consumer orientation. Many fundamentalist churches in response have withdrawn into such a defensive mode, that they also can become paralyzed and inhibit a search for truth and Christian growth and maturity.
True Christian growth may not be obtainable today through an established denomination. You may have more luck looking for an independent bible church with am emphasis on learning to use bible tools and teaching you to study and grow in the word.
