  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

The moon was created when another smaller (dwarf) planet smashed into earth during the formation of our solar system.

We have evidence for the basic hypothesis but not enough to quantify some of the specifics. Check youtube for some really cool video's showing how and why.

Which came first, the moon or the earth?

I say the moon came first.
Obviously if the 'giant impact' hypothesis is correct the Earth must have come first. To suggest that the Moon came first would be like saying that a woman was younger than her child.

In more detail, the age of the Earth, derived from radiometric dating, is 4540±20 Myr (https://en/wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_the_Earth).
As for the age of the Moon, there appears to be a contradiction between different sets of radiometric measurements; some measurements yield an age of 4530±20 Myr, whereas others yield 4470±30 Myr.

However, an interesting paper by S.A. Jacobson et al., 2014, 'Highly siderophile elements in Earth's mantle as a clock for the Moon-forming impact'; Nature, 508, 84-87, http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v508/n7494/full/nature13172.html gives a date for the formation of the Moon of 95±32 Myr after the condensation of the first solids in the solar system, i.e. 4470±30 Myr BP. If this is correct, it makes the Moon about 70±30 Myr younger than the Earth.

Why would you say that?

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

Followed by ...

Genesis 1:16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

... three days later.

I say the moon came first.
They should be the same age as they were formed at the same time. If there is a difference in age it would be based on the size. Smaller tends to last longer and bigger tends to burn up quicker. The earth started out as a very hot gas, became a liquid as it cooled and then eventually a solid.

Oh boy. Joshua, you just got beat up in the other thread because of these wildly incorrect statements. Please, please do some research before making statements like this. you're not even close...

the "smaller/bigger .... faster burning...." sounds like he's talking about stars. You know, those little lights attached to the firmament, which were made as an afterthought after making the moon in Gen 1:16.

So are you engaged in going about proving that your opinion was mistaken? The above passages taken literally would seem to prove the heaven and earth were created three days earlier than the sun and the moon and possibly the stars as well though that seems somewhat unclear as the stars are mentioned in such a way as to not be quite sure as how to pin down the exact time frame. Now, unless you are using some meaning of the word "came" that does not equate with beginning or having been created you seem to be contradicting your proposition that the moon came first.

I say the earth came first.

Hard to say for certain... I personally lean towards the "giant impactor" theory, which would mean that the Earth did indeed come first.

The moon is probably older with no fresh lava in it. When the Apollo jocks crashed their ships in the moon, the lunar seismometers stated "the moon rung like bell" as if the interior is hollow.

Would love to have a citation for that. The moon isn't hollow or anything like hollow as far as I can see
