In my experience it isn't just that we don't recognize it or admit it but we don't have a clue what real Love really is and when someone tries to discuss it we have to go out of our way to either quench the discussion or prove that we know more about what real Love is than those who have studied it and live it out. It's a very sad state for the church to be in when they refuse to hear truth. It was said of the early believers by those in amazement “Behold how they love one another!” Others simply kept their distance, for they knew that “those who had turned the entire world upside down” knew no limits to their zeal and desire to see souls brought into a love relationship with Jesus.
In forty five years of walking after God, I have yet to hear words such as these even once. The world looks on us as nice religious people but as to loving one another as we love ourselves? As to our being moved with passion that transcends our 2.8 hours of television nightly? Sorry, we pale in comparison. That is bad enough, but far worse is the fact we cannot recognize it, or even come to the place where we can admit it.
Blessings,
Gideon
