After falling and scraping his knee, as we were bandaging him my son asked me
"mom, why does God let us get hurt?"

My entire world froze at this question.
I looked him in his beautiful eyes, but had nothing to say.
    I couldn't tell him how I didn't know.
As his innocent eyes, full of tears and love looked back at me, I couldn't tell him how I have spent countless nights awake, choking back tears, asking the same question.
As I kissed his knee and hugged him, I couldn't tell him about the life draining, soul crushing betrayal I have experienced from the ones I loved most.
How they raised their voice at me.
How they put their hands on me.
I couldn't show him the knives shoved in my back.
I couldn't explain to him how the unpaid bills and the holes in my shoes and the car we depend on breaking down was all just Him testing us.
I couldn't tell him that the pain and suffering and stress and worrying and lonliness and the feeling of utter insignificance I feel every single day was part of a 'great plan'.

    I just held him.

Until finally, his sweet voice answered his own question
"maybe God is just as sad as I am when I get hurt."
All I could do was laugh as I hid my face from him.

    Maybe my love
    Maybe

Suffering in this world is inevitable. It's not what God planned, it's the result of our constant screw ups and acts of rebellion against His will. I recently found this quote and it made me think about life.

"Lower your expectations of earth. This isn't heaven, so don't expect it to be." ~Max Lucado

Yeah, life sucks and it hurts like heck but this is the kind of life we can expect to have without God. When we are finally with God and in Heaven, this current life won't matter anymore. It's illogical to lose faith in God and His promise of a perfect eternal afterlife just because this current temporary life is too hard.

This is something even the best of us struggle with from time to time.

57 is right. Tell your son the Truth of this fallen world, as withholding the Truth will only cause more pain and confusion for him in the future. Search the scriptures, spend time in prayer with the Father and inquire these things with Him. If you're still affected by your past, even after becoming a born-again Christian, ask God to deliver you from these things. Especially if you still feel resentment towards those who have hurt you. He may not deliver you right then and there, and it may take more time, but God is able, faithful and full of tender mercies. He is still fully in control, even when chaos lurks on every corner. I know He's delivered me 100% from my past (Hallelujah!) and there are countless others who have been where you are sister. Know that you're not walking this path alone. Have faith as faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

I'll be praying for you and your son. God bless you.

Hi @MotherFirefly, this is a cruel world at times, for sure, but I don't believe that God is cruel. Rather, I believe that God is love (just like the Bible tells us He is), and that He allows the world to be the way it is first of all because of free will, but also for our sakes, because He loves those of us who are His (and all of those who will be His someday too .. cf 2 Peter 3:9), so He is doing for us what He knows He needs to do to redeem us and to sanctify us :preach:

The Father's love for us caused Him to send His Son, the being He loves most of all in the universe, here to die that horrible death on the Cross in our places so that He wouldn't have to live out eternity w/o us, nor we w/o Him :) I also believe that if there was another way, any other way, in fact, to save us other than having His Son die on the Cross, He would have never sent Him here to do that for us.

I also believe that if there was any other way to see us sanctified than through suffering at times, He would have chosen that path instead of the one that He has us on now .. Hebrews 2:10; 1 Peter 5:10.

As Christians we are "aliens" in a world that we used to call home .. cf 1 Peter 2:11. He knows that we need to get our eyes off of this world and keep them focused on Him and on our future home instead, and He knows how very difficult a thing that is for us to do as well, so He disciplines us as His children for our good .. Hebrews 12:7-11.

He also promises us that as tough as life can be at times that He is there with us in the midst of it causing ~everything~, both the good and the bad, to work together for our good .. Romans 8:28. He also promises to keep us safe, that no testing'discipline from Him, or temptation by this world or the prince of the air, will be more than He knows we are able to handle .. 1 Corinthians 10:13.

This understanding, of how and why God works in our lives in the ways that He does, even through our sufferings, allowed Pastor/Theologian Charles Spurgeon to come to a place in his life as a Christian where he was able to say:

Here are some other thoughts along these lines, quotes from a couple of other Christians that I hope you will find encouraging and useful.

I'm not sure how old your son is, so he may not understand these quotes as there are written if he is too young. I know you will however, and hopefully they will help you help him understand what God is up to in this world and why, at least over time (and why these two little one-syllable words are so very important learn and abide by where our living the Christian life from day to day, and even from moment to moment, is concerned .. Trust God! :amen: .. Proverbs 3:5-6).

This first group are all quotes from Missionary/Author Elisabeth Elliot.

"Our vision is so limited that we can hardly imagine a love that does not show itself in protection from suffering…. The love of God did not protect His own Son…. He will not necessarily protect us – not from anything it takes to make us like His Son. A lot of hammering and chiseling and purifying by fire will have to go into the process."

"Leave it all in the Hands that were wounded for you"

"The secret is Christ in me, not me in a different set of circumstances"

"God never withholds from His child that which His love and wisdom call good. He never denies our heart's desire except to give us something better"

"God has promised to supply all of our needs. What we don't have now we do not need now"

"God is God. Because He is God, He is worthy of my trust and obedience. I will find rest nowhere but in His holy will, a will that is unspeakably beyond my largest notions of what He is up to."
And here's one from Pastor/Theologian A. W. Pink along these lines too.

There is much more that's been written on this topic, but I'll stop here as this seems like more than plenty for a single post ;) I hope that you have found at least some of this to be helpful!

    God bless you :)

    Romans 8
28 We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.
32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not also with Him, freely give us all things?

I remember you. You are a good one, and your post touched my heart. It made me want to cry, for the things you have been through. In all of it, you are a good mother. It is true that they all will fail you. It is times like these that one has to press into The Lord. Listen, and you will hear. And that, I am going to spend some time in prayer about. That you may hear Him clearly. His Words are perfect and are part of our relationship with Him. No longer will you have to say" where is God?" You will know, that He has been there all along. Have a better and good night.

Tell your son the truth, this world and everything in it is passing away because this wasn't God's plan for the world, it's now infested with demons, diseases, accidents, hate, wickedness and all kinds of evil, we are only experiencing these things and it isn't God's fault at all, we've been redeemed but we still live in a fallen world so yeah, your son is right, God is just as sad about this as we all are. Praying for you

John 16:33 says in this world you will have tribulation (suffering) but take heart cuz Jesus has overcome the world. Just think how horrible it would be if it had been if the universe was overcome by the devil instead of Jesus!
