Let's assume for a minute that he is innocent.

Frankly, the best thing he can do for himself is to shut. Up. He has nothing to gain by talking to the police. The police likely already consider him a suspect and talking with them is likely to do nothing more than give the police something to use against him.

You are damned if you don't talk to the police, but even more damned if you do. The only thing he should be telling the police is "talk to my lawyer".
