Yes, I heard that the temps were dropping this weekend. It's been blustery today, and draughty inside! Maybe the cooler weather will be less windy, so I might prefer it! Outdoors, I'm better in cool than heat, because I'm one of those people who absorb more radiation, and it gets painful. Somewhere in-between the two extremes is good! It's calmed down now and there are some stars out - beautiful!

We had a blast through here this morning, gusting to 40 - 50mph
I do not mind the seasons having their place in my life
Living here in Umbrella City, we see a lot of rain
anything-else, can be like we are having a rest (from something-else)

Oh yes, it is feeling really FRESH outdoors
very wet and included some hail stones (very small stuff) earlier
the lower lawn out the back has puddles amongst the grass
lets hope that it disappears, before the predicted frosts get here
or, we'll have an ice rink, this year

Hi zippy2 Hello everyone

it is 15.15 hours >> 3.15pm and already we are putting lights on indoors
rain is still falling and winds are gusting, thankfully, the double glazing and draughtproofing
means we have no draughts, and no chill spots
We will have-to put heating on, very shortly

You must have a very well insulated house Dave! I've had a difficult day with the draughts, because of an awkwardly placed air brick mainly! It's wet and blustery here too, but I think the really colder weather is due Sat/Sun.

Temps in the 60s sounds very nice ladies.

Yes 60's are my favorite temps. However, tonight it is supposed to get in the 30's with rain..so might be a frost. We'll have to turn the heat on too Dave. Everybody stay warm and toasty!!

Yes the local housing authority completed the installation of double-glazing a couple of years ago
fitting composite front and back door units (also double-glazed) and included integral draughtproofing strips
and 3 years before that, the cavity walls were filled with and inert insulation filler and also placed
yet another layer, of roof insulation fibre over the top of what was already-existing in the loft
(is now, some 30 centimeters in depth) The cold water storage cisterns (tanks) (in the loft)
have been emptied and disconnected... removing the risk of freezing-up and consequent leaks
The hot water storage-tank has also been removed, along with the old water boiler
which was replaced by a gas Combi Boiler (central-heating & domestic hot-water)
Now, we get hot water ON-DEMAND only, no storage and no waste

I was talking 30F dear brother Dave. That is cold to me. Course if it stays above 32F it is not sooooo bad. Maybe it is all in my hard little head. LOL

There is a quick and SIMPLE remedy, that won't inhibit ventilation
BUT it certainly will KILL that draught

Airbrick ¬

Grab a hold of some hollow fibre (found in most pillows sold today)
slightly-larger than the airbrick and about two inches thick
You will also need a wire 'coat hanger' (2 x 8 inch lengths)

Each piece of wire will need a half inch to one inch of one end
bending over just slightly to create a 45 degree arrow point

Thrust one of them through the airbrick [top left hole]
and the other one through the [bottom right hole] until the 'arrow head' opens
on the other side of the airbrick

Now push the wad of hollow fibre over the wires until the wad rests against the airbrick
and now fold-over the exposed ends of wire, so that they contain the wad loosely against the airbrick
et voila.... no more gusts and ventilation is NOT 'impaired'

Ahhhhhhhhhhh yes you would need a little warming-up
whenever temps were so low ... we too
Maybe the cold hits our tootsies (feet) first

They recommend 60.F for us oldies.... 70.F is really balmy

Dave, thank you so much for your advice above about dealing with the air brick. That is ideal. It's next to a gas meter, so that wouldn't be dangerous at all, would it? You are well insulated. This is a Victorian/Edwardian mid-terrace, so it's insulated either side, but the front and back are not. It's of the age when you can't have cavity wall insulation - I'm not even sure if there is a cavity. LOL!

Had a walk not long after posting above - a little chilly, but very enjoyable. The rain had bucketed down, ten minutes earlier, but then almost stopped, and the stars began to come out - to the east, still cloudy towards the west. I wonder if our weather is coming from the east, at the moment, which would explain why it's a bit colder than recently.

Zippy2, a drop from 60F to 30F in one day, sounds quite extreme to me. Do you get very hot summers? We had a lady on here, a while ago, who was always saying how hot the Texas summers were, but it may be because she was in a city. Do the temperatures vary much within the State?

Sahjimara, does it get much colder than 60F in Florida?

That type of build could very probably benefit from the injection of silicones
or, painting with a Weathershield product_ possibly 18" solid stonework (idk...sight-unseen)
The problem with solid walls is heat conduction
Without adequate ventilation they will suffer from condensation moulds, because the walls are so cold
The heavier wallpapers pasted over foil sheets, will help 'reflect' the internal warmth much better
The windows could be draughtproofed, with the construction of a batten '8' frame [-]
made to fit the window cavity with heavy-duty polythene sheet wrapped entirely around it >> ie: front and back (two layers with a gap between ?)

The forecast for this weekend shows a weather system that will 'hit' us from the Northwest
Time will tell, if that was / is correct... We haven't very long left, before we find out
what exactly it has in-store for us

The cupboards, fridges and freezers are full...
I have spare canisters for my blow lamp, in case the gas goes off
Our LED lamps are fully-charged, in case the electric goes off
I have FOUR large jars of Lemon Tea in the cupboard .... so, let it blow
