Say you're waiting on the bus, train, metro, check-out line, anywhere you're next to a stranger with about a minute to talk.

A guy turns to you & asks, "So what do you think the pinnacle of humanity is?"

I'd say, "Jesus Christ!" and then look upward (toward heaven)................and I'd wait to see how the guy interprets my response. ^_^

Convincing people that working a job they hate to buy things they don't have time to use, and pre packaged food that shortens thier life, in order to get up tomorrow and do it all again, is the American dream.

The pinnacle is embodied in those who achieved the total cessation of all suffering, like the Buddha.

Great discussion so far, thank you!

I intended it to be too short a time to go deeply philosophical; while long, deep responses are very good to have, sometimes we only have a minute to talk.

Second to Christ walking the earth, I think the New York Mets 1969 World Series championship of 1969 was tops. Remember that the best they had ever finished before that was ninth out of ten.

Good question, and good thread concept.

I think its either some musical achievement (not sure which).... or the creation of learning machines (which one day may surpass humanity).

A straight up, but very cold Martini, made with 8 parts Bombay Sapphire gin to 1 part Dolin or Noilly Pratt dry vermouth. Shaken over fresh ice (a la James Bond. Preferably in a chilled, silver cocktail shaker.) Then strained into a crystal stemmed cocktail glass, and placed in the freezer for 30 minutes till icy cold. Garnished with 2 Castelvetrano olives (the best martini olives.) Sipped slowly and reverently, holding the glass only by the stem. So as not to warm the drink with your hand. The ultimate pinnacle of human civilization.

Well, if you were to ask me earlier in the year, it would be Damien Hardwick's success in turning the mediocre Richmond team into the premiership winners and outstanding team they are now.

However, if you asked me today I'd have to ask you to come back in a month when it is likely he'll make it back-to-back wins.

Moving on from superstition / gullibility.

Okay, maybe the St. Louis Cardinals' World Series championship in 1964 was more impressive. After all, they were my favorite team, and Ken Boyer, my favorite player, hit a grand slam home run in one of the games, trailing the Yankees, 3-0, to win 4-3.
