Hi to all , and here is my take on why Jesus was BAPTIZED !!

Here is what MARK 10"38 and 39 mean !!

#1 , In MARK 10:37 JAMES and John ask Jesus to GRANT unto them , that they would sit on thge RIGHT and LEFT hand !!

#2 , Then Jesus ask them if they , CAN YOU DRINK of the CUP that I DRINK OF ?

The CUP / POTERNON is in the Greek ACCURATIVE CASE and is the DIRECT OBJECT and points to the suffering of drinking of the CUP !

The CUP of Jesus was the SUFFERING and PERSECUTION that Jesus ENDURED !!

The Greek word DRINK / PINO is in teh Greek PERSENT TENSE , ACTIVE VOICE and in the INDICATIVE MOOD !!

The PRESENT TENSE means this tense of drinking the cup WILL HAPPEN dur there life tine and continue during there life time !!

#3 AND BE BAPTIZED / BAPTIZO , and it means here to be IDENTIFIED with Him !!

If you disagree with the ABOVE , see 1 Cor 10:2 where it reads , And all were BAPTIZED together unto Moses in the CLOUD and in the SEA !!

This BAPTISM means to be IDENIFIED with Israel and FULFIL the righteous OF THE LAW OF MOSES and to be HIGH PRIEST as MELCHISEDEC .

Is 1 Cor 10:2 WATER BAPTISM , and how pray tell can those Israelites be WATER BAPTISED UNOT MOSES , the CLOUD and in the SEA ??

#4 All should check the Greek text as the second Greek word in verse 38 WITH THE BAPTISMA , notice that it is Greek word BAPTISMA , so what does BAPTISMA then mean ??

You will all have the same PROBLEM in Eph 4:5 where it reads ONE / HEIS , BAPTISMA and the means that there is only one BAPTIZED , the HOLY SPIRIT !!

The Greek word BAPTISA is used 22 times from MATTHEW --- EPHESIANS !!

#5 Verse 39 And the Greek word DRINK / PINO is in the PRESENT TENSE and mans that from that time line with be SUFFERING and PERSECUTION as they will also drink of the CUP that Jesus drank from !!

And the Greek word DRINK OF / PINO is in the Greek FUTURE TENSE which speaks to the Great Tribulation !!

#6 And BAPTISM / BAPTISMA which is HOLY SPIRIT baptism as recorded in Acts 1:5

And the last Greek SHALL YE BE BAPTIZED is in the Greek FUTURE TENSE which speaks to those in the GREAT TRIBULATION !!

Jesus also drank the cup of victory over sin. He taught good morals. He gave sight to the blind. Crippled people walked. Sick people were made well. He gave bread to the hungry. He taught people to love one another. Jesus told them to be as harmless as doves. If some one strikes your cheek, turn and offer the other cheek. You shall not kill.

What does this have to do with Traditional Theology? Did you read the SOP for this forum? None of the traditional liturgical churches interpret the Theophany in the manner proposed by the OP. Rather, the baptism of our Lord is generally regarded as a sanctification of baptism, making it a holy sacrament by which sins are washed away, for Christ is sinless (see recapitulation theology).

The Lutherans, Orthodox, Catholics, Anglicans, Assyrians, Moravians, Methodists, Congregationalists and traditional Reformed churches do not associate the baptism of our Lord with the Tribulation. @Dan Perez you might ask the mods to move this thread to a more appropriate forum.

It's pretty clear what the text means.

Jesus speaks of the "cup" and "baptism" of His Passion, James and John the sons of Zebedee ask the Lord to be on His right and left; but Jesus asks if they are prepared to suffer with Him. They say they are, but we also know that the disciples fled after His arrest (save for "the disciple whom Jesus loved" traditionally believed to be John). But all the apostles would share in the cup and baptism of suffering, and all--save John according to tradition--suffered a martyr's death.

So Jesus tells them that they would share in suffering, that they like their Lord would drink and be washed in the suffering of this world, despised even as He was.
