• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

    If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

    If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Hi guys,

Look lets get straight to the point, i know someone who has been diagonised with it..........i dont want to talk to him about it because i'll get emberrased about asking!!

But what is it? I have heard alot about it i think (is it where your unsociable and wont speak?? or is that something else)

Or if anybody knows any websites that will have a decent overview on what Autism is please can somebody inform me of it!

Hi & Welcome to CF Jamesw;

First off...is this a friend around your age or is it someone alot younger? I've listed some websites, but most have information that is about children.

Autism is actually known as a Spectrum Disorder...this means that not everyone has 'all' the symptoms...each person can have a varying degree of some or one or all. For example: My son was diagnosed before he was 2, he is considered to have High Functioning Autism at this time but the Dr is expecting the diagnoses to be changed in the next couple of years to Asperger's Syndrome. My son is very advanced in academic type things (4yrs old but functions in school work at a grade one level) however his speech and social development is at a 2-3 year olds' level. We are working on helping him use proper sentence structure when talking and putting him in situations that will make him play with other children so that we can help him develop socially.

Its really good of you to take the time to research this, being informed is a huge part of understanding...please feel free to ask more and we'll see if we can help.
