you should report it to the police, in case it's been a repeated offence in your area they could do an investigation of some sort.

    Unlucky.

I was going to post saying how surprising it was to see European cars in America but you're from the UK... It's a nice clio in the background, at least it looks like a clio. I was thinking about buying one, they have such a bad resell value here, nobody wants them in Australia.

I would be paranoid, someone breaks my window I would take that as they were testing (response time, cops, my own) etc.

I would set booty traps in your house tonight before bed.

Not likely. I work with Ex-cons. They would not break a window to check response time as doing so only attracts the authorities and puts the owner into vigilance mode. If they were going to do it:

1.) They would have to know that it was worth it.

2.) They would want to know when the owner is out and would get it done as fast as possible not just smash a window and return the next day.

Likely a drunk or accidental. Thieves would not break a window and run.

You are assuming I am referring to burglary. Bust a window you see what the home owner comes to investigate, if the show up with a tennis racket, you know thats the best they got. Wait a month, two.... and bam.

If they don't wake up you know they are heavy sleepers.

Besides, even if it were, a busted window and nothing stolen doesn't mean it has to be that same house, they were testing, if it takes the cops 20 mins. the guy across the street would take the same amount of time, maybe someone else on the block.

A broken window that seems accidental is NOT going to be the talk of the neighborhood.

    Ack.

When I lived near the "party" street up north houses did have several windows broken due to drunken antics. Anything from people thinking it's funny to push each other into walls (windows...) to breaking them just for the fun of it.

It wouldn't cross my mind that it would be anything other than a consequence of drunken antics, in my experience of living in rough areas you do not break a window and wait. Not unless, as Forge pointed out, there's something of significant value inside. You break the window, take what you can, and leg it. If it's harassment for other reasons you tend to start small, working your way up. Unless there's history... my stalker did actually break a window after he found out I'd put forward the actions required for a restraining order.

Even for different houses you do not want to be making too much noise about it, accidental breaks or not people generally get a little more leery for weeks afterwards. At least they do around here ...

    But this is Richard!

    Drunks can be silly.

If the owner has a lot of goodies in his house then they may go through the trouble of setting up something. Also response time varies. I also work with the police and trust me it can vary. Though you may be right and these are 'dumb' criminals. Rich neighbpourhoods, at least in my area, have a neighbourhood watch set up. I win ?? :p

To the OP we were broken into years ago through the basement window and they stole the Tv and such. So Toro is possibly right and it does not hurt to set-up a fail safe system just in case it was not accidental.
