The National Rifle Association likes to claim that all adult men are somehow part of "the militia." Somehow this absurd notion justifies widespread ownership of handguns, although handguns have no military value.
Handguns do have a place in American history. Alexander Hamilton died after being shot by Aaron Burr in a duel in 1804.
President Abraham Lincoln was shot in the back of the head with a handgun at close range by John Wilkes Booth in 1865. Perhaps Lincoln could have managed the aftermath of the Civil War better than Andrew Johnson and his successors. We will never know.
James Garfield may be one of the most able men ever elected President. Again, we will never know if his qualifications would have led to a successful presidency. Shortly after taking office, he was shot at close range with a handgun by a disappointed office seeker, Charles Guiteau. Garfield died some months later.
In his second term, President William McKinley was shot and killed by an anarchist. The assassin, Leon Czolgosz, concealed a handgun under a handkerchief.
In 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was running for President as a Progressive. In Milwaukee, he was shot with a 38 caliber revolver. TR recovered and the assailant, Joseph Schrank, was found insane.
In 1933, President-elect Franklin Roosevelt was speaking in Miami. The Mayor of Chicago, Anton Cermak, was there. An angry assailant, Guiseppe Zangara, opened fire, hitting five people and killing Anton Cermak.
Bobby Kennedy might well have captured the Democratic nomination and been elected President in 1968. Instead, after winning the California primary, he was shot and killed with a handgun by Sirhan Sirhan.
George Wallace was shot with a handgun in an assassination attempt in Laurel, Maryland in May of 1972. Wallace was seeking the Democratic nomination. He was paralyzed in the legs but continued to hold political office.
A couple of months after taking office as President, Ronald Reagan was shot with a handgun by Arthur Bremer. Reagan was shot in the chest. Surgeons removed the bullet and Reagan made a full recovery after being hospitalized for a month. Press Secretary James Brady was hit in the head by another bullet from Bremer's gun and sustained serious brain damage. Bremer was found insane.
Although handguns have no military value, they have taken a terrible toll on American leadership.
