COVID put a damper on immigration, but didn't put a damper on the conditions of corruption, poverty and violence in Central America. As soon as it was safe, the immigrants began their journeys--during the Trump administration, last fall.
The Biden Administration will not send unaccompanied minors home, and that accounts for most of the increase.
Imagine, if you will, what an atmosphere of cooperation and compromise would do to help solve our immigration crisis. Ain't never gonna happen, it seems.

The numbers seem to go up and down on a logic of their own.” People leave their home countries for reasons other than U.S. policy, such as deteriorating economic, political or public safety conditions.
