They need a more effective test for alcohol use so companies that so choose can exclude drinkers from employment.

Hey, maybe we should just ban all cell phones, since stupid people can't seem to avoid driving under their "influence" either.
Here in the UK, it is illegal to use a 'phone while driving. The only exceptions to the law are for calls to the emergency services.Hey, maybe we should just ban all cell phones, since stupid people can't seem to avoid driving under their "influence" either.
It is here in the US too, at least in many states. Here in the UK, it is illegal to use a 'phone while driving. The only exceptions to the law are for calls to the emergency services.

true, but machines are never smarter than the folks that programmed them. so I don't think one can program a vehicle to account for every problem that a human while driving could face.
Computers with automated controls can react far faster than human reflexes. Google is already testing driverless cars and with the ability for cars to communicate their speed, position and obstacles to each other it won't be long before you can just get in, enter a destination and enjoy the ride.
As a motorcyclist I look forward to it.![]()
That may be true, BK, and I don't know how used to it I'll get, but I will need to be sure to stay vigilant and alert. That's how I feel about it. It's easier to be caught off guard with everything being done for a person instead of them doing things for themselves. JMO.
It reminds me - the everything will be automated - of C.S. Lewis' Abolition of Man, which he writes about the losing of a man's chest - the heart of a person, which Fr. Tom talks about as well in his talk on that very book.

You no longer have a person, but a machine - or just a body walking about.

Naw... That is not true..Cell phones are NOT addictive... neither are guns... In a while you guys will say we should outlaw sugar for it makes people sick....BUT narcotics are few...and one of them is marijuana...Hey, maybe we should just ban all cell phones, since stupid people can't seem to avoid driving under their "influence" either.

Driving under the influence of marijuana is also illegal. Yet the title of the thread seems to assume marijuana itself is the problem. We might as well blame cell phones in general for all cell phone related accidents... It has NOTHING to do with the laws, or stupid people breaking said laws. Hysteria is always the most logical option.
Yes marijuana is a drug, and yes it needs to be treated with respect. Education and regulation is key. Pure prohibition is an utter failure, as the linked articles have clearly demonstrated.
I'm not sure how things work in the US but for Canadians the tests themselves seems to work well. The test for alcohol and drug use do pick up these substances well. If they test positive there are different policies and probations etc that the employees go through. The only thing is I know some people who are addicted try to skip through and use in between tests but they do have random testing for the most part now I believe. People have lost their jobs due to these tests here.
That would be a good thing to take place here but it is not happening for the most part. I have not seen random testings anywhere but maybe be wrong. I wish though maybe driving high would have been eliminated and people would feel safer...Although you cannot do the same for alcochol and I think that is why the DUI is so severe and you lose your license ...I wish they would do the same in Greece...Drunk driving is terrible there![]()
I know tons of good caring moms and dads that smoke marijuana daily. They hold jobs and look after their kids well. Of course, you won't hear abut that in the news. Just stories about people who'd likely be bad parents on and off marijuana. If she could get weed, I bet she'd be drinking beer anyway.

Good unfortunately here and in Europe we are a bit behind i think... Nowadays that the Greek law changed to three times a DUI they take your license Greeks are waking up. As far as driving under the influence with drugs I think we are stricter in Greece for they can just take your license on the spot if they do the appropriate testing that is. I know cases where they did not to give the person a chance but they do put it down as a suspect. IMHO if you put people in danger you should stay home or let another drive... But the reason we have the law is because at theis point there is no "responsibility" to the person as the drug/alcohol makes the decision for them...... yes we have pretty stiff laws here too for dui and it's gotten tougher with the government that is now in place. Insurance companies here are very tough on dui too. One time slip as opposed to 3 times ...big problems.
