Hey, maybe we should just ban all cell phones, since stupid people can't seem to avoid driving under their "influence" either.

We could just cut to the chase and ban stupid people instead of everything that makes their driving even worse than it naturally is. < disclaimer that is me being sarcastic.

Here in the UK, it is illegal to use a 'phone while driving. The only exceptions to the law are for calls to the emergency services.
It is here in the US too, at least in many states.

Driving under the influence of marijuana is also illegal. Yet the title of the thread seems to assume marijuana itself is the problem. We might as well blame cell phones in general for all cell phone related accidents... It has NOTHING to do with the laws, or stupid people breaking said laws. Hysteria is always the most logical option.

Yes marijuana is a drug, and yes it needs to be treated with respect. Education and regulation is key. Pure prohibition is an utter failure, as the linked articles have clearly demonstrated.

They need a more effective test for alcohol use so companies that so choose can exclude drinkers from employment.

I'm not sure how things work in the US but for Canadians the tests themselves seems to work well. The test for alcohol and drug use do pick up these substances well. If they test positive there are different policies and probations etc that the employees go through. The only thing is I know some people who are addicted try to skip through and use in between tests but they do have random testing for the most part now I believe. People have lost their jobs due to these tests here.

true, but machines are never smarter than the folks that programmed them. so I don't think one can program a vehicle to account for every problem that a human while driving could face.

Computers with automated controls can react far faster than human reflexes. Google is already testing driverless cars and with the ability for cars to communicate their speed, position and obstacles to each other it won't be long before you can just get in, enter a destination and enjoy the ride.

As a motorcyclist I look forward to it. :D

lol :D ...and then there are computer glitches and if there's any kind of internet connection there are viruses etc. hmmm...not so sure how comfy I feel about trusting a computer that much.

That may be true, BK, and I don't know how used to it I'll get, but I will need to be sure to stay vigilant and alert. That's how I feel about it. It's easier to be caught off guard with everything being done for a person instead of them doing things for themselves. JMO.

It reminds me - the everything will be automated - of C.S. Lewis' Abolition of Man, which he writes about the losing of a man's chest - the heart of a person, which Fr. Tom talks about as well in his talk on that very book.

You no longer have a person, but a machine - or just a body walking about.

Yes, this issue of machine and man seems to be ever pressing. :)

Naw... That is not true..Cell phones are NOT addictive... neither are guns... In a while you guys will say we should outlaw sugar for it makes people sick....BUT narcotics are few...and one of them is marijuana...
Here in the UK, it is illegal to use a 'phone while driving. The only exceptions to the law are for calls to the emergency services.

Same here and texting is a no no you can get a fine doing it. But they do not enforce it.. :(

Yes marijuana is the problem itself for it is illegal to use it! It is an illegal drug I already said that it is bad for you like any also legal drug that impaires someone's driving skills.
No we do not blame cell phones for their use is illegal we blame the usage of the phones. I am not hysteric...over cell phones but for people who use them illegally ;)

I think there is some confusion here of the two ...

Marijuana is an illegal drug and only legal for medicinal use (in some places) it is a tool for these folks who use it responsibly and for medical reasons. For the folks who do not it is illegal drug use ;)

Nothing wrong with the title of this thread ;) It simply signals to the illegal use of a narcotic...

That would be a good thing to take place here but it is not happening for the most part. I have not seen random testings anywhere but maybe be wrong. I wish though maybe driving high would have been eliminated and people would feel safer...Although you cannot do the same for alcochol and I think that is why the DUI is so severe and you lose your license ...I wish they would do the same in Greece...Drunk driving is terrible there :(

Yes, alcohol is different but you can test while on the job but for the drug testing the drugs stay in the body longer and do get detected. Truck driving companies do, some gas and oil field companies and even the college here was considering tests for the staff but I'm not sure if they followed through or not. ...but yeah some people have lost jobs and this is good with dangerous machinery etc and being under the influence.

I know tons of good caring moms and dads that smoke marijuana daily. They hold jobs and look after their kids well. Of course, you won't hear abut that in the news. Just stories about people who'd likely be bad parents on and off marijuana. If she could get weed, I bet she'd be drinking beer anyway.

Someone using illegally and I emphasize the illegally part of a drug is not a "good parent" period... Using a substance that the state declares illegal is NOT a cool parent by any means...And the argument there are many irresponsible parents who don't is a non argument!! We are talking about plain irresponsibility here... we are conserned with the ones who actually are taking a substance that indeed puts their kids in danger. I do not buy the motto...I do not buy the comparison sorry to disagree. You are giving a bad example to your kids taking an illegal drug and busting the law.... Is that the example EO christians want to give to their kids ? I think not. The comparison to the beer is a cope out. Just because the state does not make alcohol illegal that does not mean that we need to legalize another drug such as marijuana :(
I would be on the other end of the argument to make the laws at least stricter about alcohol not more lenient...

... yes we have pretty stiff laws here too for dui and it's gotten tougher with the government that is now in place. Insurance companies here are very tough on dui too. One time slip as opposed to 3 times ...big problems.
Good unfortunately here and in Europe we are a bit behind i think... Nowadays that the Greek law changed to three times a DUI they take your license Greeks are waking up. As far as driving under the influence with drugs I think we are stricter in Greece for they can just take your license on the spot if they do the appropriate testing that is. I know cases where they did not to give the person a chance but they do put it down as a suspect. IMHO if you put people in danger you should stay home or let another drive... But the reason we have the law is because at theis point there is no "responsibility" to the person as the drug/alcohol makes the decision for them... :( That is why it is important for the law to be stiff....The rest is just lip service...about drinking responsibly etc. You have a problem with drug/alcohol do not drive and cause danger to others. And yeah the texting and cell phone will come right after this... You are addicted to texting ...lol... or using your phone to chit chat and do not pay attention to the road ...stay home and text to your heart's desire...lol... Sorry for the rant but one of our deacons was involved in an accident that he alomost lost his legs cause the girls in front of him was texting while driving...Three cars and a bus (our deacon was behind it) were severely hit because of her :( Will say no more...:sorry:
