There's some interesting points here about the 7th day, calendars etc...

I just did a google and found this:

I've no idea of the site or those who run it so I won't vouch for them, but they reason that the Sabbath has remained constant.

I'm really getting sick of this Western-dominated on when the Sabbath is. How about this? For the definition of the official language of at least 1.3 billion people in the world, the Sabbath is on Sunday.

In Chinese, Monday is known as "the First Day", Tuesday is "the Second Day", so if you can count, the seventh day is "Sunday".

Case closed.


The point is: God doesn't give a damn about which day we have as a rest day, as long as it IS a rest day and that we honour Him specially by gathering to worship Him. Get over your obsessions with linguistic differences, will you?

So when did we (The Church) start counting days accourding to China and not the way the Jews counted days?

The Sabbath is Saturday and always has been, this not from the west my friend, this is from the Eastern Churches.

The Jews all over the world observe the same time of the week as the sabbath. They observe the day we westerners call Saturday. Well friday sundown to saturday sundown. They have been doing this from at least the time of Moses. Christ was a Jew He observed the Sabbath from what we now call Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. We are to follow His example.

The point is, which day of the week it is doesn't matter. Can you imagine God throwing a fit in Heaven that His children are observing the rest day on a "SUNDAY" instead of a "SATURDAY"?

Remember again. The literal Israelite Law was for Israelites ONLY.

I doubt that God is going to throw a fit. I personally believe there will be many sincere Christians in Heaven that have never observed the Sabbath...but would have if they realized that God wanted them to observe it.

The tree of knowledge was a test. Why condem all of Mankind just because Adam ate from the tree of knowledge...afterall it's just a tree. But God told them not to eat from it. Adam had to make a choice and decide if he would be obedient to God or not. He chose badly. The Seventh Day is Holy to God.

NLT Gen 2:3 And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from his work of creation.


Gen 2:16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat:

Gen 2:17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

Exo. 20: Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

Isa 66.23 And it shall come to pass, [that] from one new moon to another, and from one sabbath to another, shall all flesh come to worship before me, saith the LORD.

24 And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.

It was for the stranger in their gates as well. But the commandment itself pointed back to creation, at which time God sanctified and blessed the 7th day. There was no Israel at that time, so we can assume it was for more than the Israelites.

And the Sabbath was kept even by the majority of gentiles for 400 years at least in the early church.

If anything we are called heretics because we believe in annhilationism (which would be more humane in my book). If you wish to discuss it though you will have to go to our forum since it is on the do not discuss list here.

But we do not believe than anyone who is sincerely following God with all of their heart, even if they are missing some point or another (as we doubtless all are) will be lost for that. And that includes the Sabbath command.

I don't think God considers being worshiped "work" I think God rests with us on the Sabbath like He most likely did with Adam and Eve He at creation.

Whether or not that's true - it's irrelevant to the OP.

I'm not an adventist nor do I keep the Sabbath because my opinion had always been that the specific day was irrelevant. BUT I've always conceded that the "Sabbath day" is Friday sundown to Saturday sundown. It's just a fact!

That said - I've been feeling a personal conviction to start keeping the Sabbath. The way I figure there are 2 choices here:

1. God set apart the Sabbath as Holy so we should keep it. If you believe that, you can't pick which day God set aside. It's already been done. It's Friday sundown till Saturday sundown.

2. The day's irrelevant... BUT if we're going to set aside a specific day anyway, which many of us do (ie: Sunday) why not just stick to the day that God originally instituted? If it doesn't matter either way - why insist on doing it man's way?

well, that depends on how you look at it

God is always at work, and Jesus was too, for the salvation of souls.

Joh 5:14 Afterward Jesus found him in the temple and said to him, "See, you are well! Sin no more, that nothing worse may happen to you."
Joh 5:15 The man went away and told the Jews that it was Jesus who had healed him.
Joh 5:16 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus, because he was doing these things on the Sabbath.
Joh 5:17 But Jesus answered them, "My Father is working until now, and I am working."
Joh 5:18 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.


Just as the priests worked even more in the temple on the Sabbath, but were held guiltless according to Jesus.

Mat 12:5 Or have you not read in the Law how on the Sabbath the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath and are guiltless?
Mat 12:6 I tell you, something greater than the temple is here.


But yes, while it is work it is certainly not the kind of work that defiles, but the very work of salvation. And I assume that is what both of you meant ultimately.

I quite agree!

Incidentally in church history by the second century we see many keeping both, which I suppose is also an option. The first day was kept in honor of the resurrection, and the Sabbath as the Sabbath.

By the time of the council of Laodicea they were downplaying the Sabbath and attributing rest (if possible) to Sunday, mixing the two.

I don't do it man's way but rather God's way. The bible says not to let anyone judge you by what day you celebrate the sabbath. Therefore I keep sunday as a sabbath and try to keep the entire week for God.

You worship on Sunday? Good, that is God's way, He wants us to worship Him constantly.

You keep Sunday as Sabbath? That is not God's way, we learn from Genesis that it is on Saturday, and we learn from Malachi that God is unchanging.

The verse about not letting anyone judge you in Sabbath day is talking about not letting anyone condemn you for keeping them. That is keeping them the way God wants them kept. It is not talking about changing it, it says do it without regard for people condemning you.
