Man did I read that wrong at first. :)

The apostles were not bishops themselves per se, but appointed bishops to act on their behalf. Those bishops they appointed became the successors to the apostles.

Jesus gave them that they were apostles. It was a gift.

But notice what Paul says is needed in order for a man to be a bishop > 1 Timothy 3:1-10. The man needs to have the character of Jesus, so he can lead by example >

"nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock." (1 Peter 5:3)

But did those apostles, at first, have such character? No. But they were given the gift of apostleship. But then they grew and matured, until Peter could say he also was an "elder" > 1 Peter 5:1-3.

But this forum is about politics. So, what does this have to do with politics?

We can see how God wants a leader to be a good example, not just someone who can make things happen and control people to do what he or she wants. We need to be "clothed with humility", Peter says, in 1 Peter 5:5.

And the ones of us who obey this can accomplish more, with God, than ones unhumble who are politicians.

"'In your seed all the nations shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.'" (Genesis 22:18)

However, there are even church leaders who are said to be bishops; yet, they are not qualified as the examples our Apostle Paul says ones need to become > 1 Timothy 3:1-10. But we with God can pray what accomplishes more than public unqualified, political bishops are trying to do.

The office of an apostle and the pastoral/bishop/elder/presbyter are separate and distinct from each other. One did not succeed from another, rather, they were to first to appoint pastoral/bishop/elder/presbyter in the early church until the church herself was able to appoint them themselves. Sadly, centuries after they died the political influence created different categories for the bishop, adding other forms of clergy under and above them. But, God permitted it so in many places until time of Reform was really necessary.

I hope this helps. :)
