So, I know that it says no wine on Wednesday and Friday fasts. But, does that include beer too?

Spirit of the fast? Probably. Slavic use? Rob said it perfectly :) Other jurisdictions? Mostly no. Reality? It’s a mixed understanding between individuals and jurisdictions.

I see! So it’s more of a Spiritual Father question.

The priest in my parish has indicated that the 'no wine' fast(s) includes all alcoholic beverages.
    ;)
yes, it was asked during catechism... both times I went through.

My priest has been known to prescribe beer after a particularly frustrating Wednesday / Friday :D

In my time in the same parish:
    1st priest - beer okay
2nd priest - beer not okay
    3rd priest - haven’t asked

    :-D

I believe my priest told me that technically beer is okay. And Fr. Matt (@ArmyMatt) said, if I remember during one of my questions some time ago about fasting, that the prohibition on wine was not so much because it was alcoholic as that traditionally it had been stored in wine skins made of animal hide. (Please correct me if I am remembering wrong…”I'm just a poor old man.... My legs are grey. My ears are gnarled. My eyes are old and bent”…and my memory isn’t so good neither.) But I also believe he said this is an “ask your priest” question as there is significant variation in practice.

I just asked my priest and he said:

“The spirit of the Fast is no alcohol due to its pleasant, relaxing, stupefying effects. Beer is not only liquid bread, but fermented liquid bread. I suppose alcohol free beer would be ok.”

Thanks for everyone’s help and discernment here!

If you don't mind my asking; what kind of fast do you follow on Wednesday and Friday?

no meat or dairy, usually no wine. it's done to always remember when Judas agreed to betray Jesus (Wednesday) and the crucifixion (Friday) because every Sunday is a little mini Easter service.

and I will add, Christians fasting on Wednesday and Friday is recorded in the Didache, which is one of the Church's earliest texts.
