Want advice about re-establishing communication with a friend

In the past I had been writing to a pen-pal but have not written very much within the last year. So I thought I would find if anyone has advice on what to do in order to re-establish communication. I don't mean pen-pal in the most literal sense because we were writing over email. Some things came between us, such as a lot of things I have been busy with. But I am hoping to continue writing more eventually.
I tried finding articles with advice on this subject but I think I did not come up with a whole lot on this subject. So I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts? I'm thinking of asking something such as how is life or how are things going.

Just write her an e-mail asking her how is she, and how is she progressing in her career/studies. Tell her you are sorry for not writing very much, but you have been busy with other pursuits and would like to correspond with her again.
