Kroger to require shoppers wear masks, hours after Walmart mask mandate

Kroger to require shoppers wear masks as U.S. COVID-19 cases soar, hours after Walmart announces mask mandate
Alexander Coolidge
Cincinnati Enquirer

Starting next Wednesday, Kroger will require shoppers to wear masks nationwide as coronavirus cases soar nationwide, prompting a growing number of national retailers – including Walmart – to switch customer mask policy to a requirement.

"We are taking this extra step now because we recognize additional precautions are needed to protect our country," the nation's largest supermarket chain said Wednesday in a statement. Kroger said it would make an exception for customers with medical reasons as well as small children.

I wonder what took so long--pandering to ignorant shoppers is probably a good guess.

Possibly it was because the cases just recently started to spike in so many more places. Perhaps they were waiting for the local government to mandate them before taking that step on their own?

These are national chains.

Local governments across 100% of the nation have not required masks.

One estimate from Walmart themselves showed that 35% of Walmarts and Sam's Clubs are in areas without mask requirements.\
Currently about 65 percent of our more than 5,000 stores and clubs are located in areas where there is some form of government mandate on face coverings. T

Maybe, but it is irresponsible both ways. Epidemiologists, have been consistent for months now about the use of masks. Initially they hesitated because of the world supply of PPE was inadequate. There is no excuse for ignorance and non compliance when it is so easy to help protect the health of our neighbors.

I'm glad they are stepping up because my governor and local towns around us won't.
Although my Gov. did give two very scathing statements about people who refuse to wear them.

It becomes hard to trust people when they start out by lying to you. Had they said no one can have PPE except health care workers but everyone should wear some form of face coverings they would be seen as more credible in what they are saying now. They discouraged any kind of face covering by saying masks are ineffective in stopping the virus for fairly self serving reasons on their part so any skepticism people now have is partially their own fault.

This is excuse-finding over correct action seeking.

You are assuming they were lying. You have to understand that at the very beginning of this outbreak, epidemiologists were still studying this virus. This is why it is called the Novel Corona Virus; novel means new. They didn't start out with maximal knowledge. Scientific knowledge develops over time. The more scientists learned, the better the their recommendation became. Your assumption that they were lying demonstrates a misunderstanding of the scientific method and the value of expertise medical knowledge.

Why is the anti-guv'ment crowd so opposed to private businesses enacting their own health and safety regulations?
Wal-Mart is very aware of its bottom line, and if they didn't recognize that this is what their customers want they wouldn't do it.

How many minimum wage workers have already been killed by the virus obtained at their essential jobs?

I'm really surprised that it hasn't been national policy way before now.

If Walmart, etc had required this in the beginning, it's likely we would not be in the mess we all find ourselves in now.
Where do you people live? Do you not have running water?

Too many.
My daughter works at a small, five store, restaurant franchisee. This one business has had three deaths.
They no longer refer to themselves as "essential" workers but as "Sacrificial" workers.

It is not an assumption but a conclusion based upon the words coming from Dr. Fauci's mouth.

https://www.thestreet.com/video/dr-fauci-masks-changing-directive-coronavirus

So, why weren't we told to wear masks in the beginning?

"Well, the reason for that is that we were concerned the public health community, and many people were saying this, were concerned that it was at a time when personal protective equipment, including the N95 masks and the surgical masks, were in very short supply. And we wanted to make sure that the people namely, the health care workers, who were brave enough to put themselves in a harm way, to take care of people who you know were infected with the coronavirus and the danger of them getting infected."
