Hey guys - lighten up - it's for discussion - we couldn't change anything if we wanted to. Why make everything so serious - it was a point of interest only.

You're being disingenuous. If you don't want people to take your words seriously, don't start a thread on a serious subject.

Others have called you out for posting things w/o checking their validity - I'm fairly new here, so I won't jump into that fray, but IMO this thread (and threads like it) is consistent with those charges. You posted something inflammatory, but when someone called you on it, you immediately feigned innocence.

If you want to politely discuss an issue without making a claim, ask a question. Don't repeat verbatim an absurd charge.

It doesn't matter. That point isn't as relevant as you seem to think it is. From a purely technical POV, I respect some things about WM and their ability to mine data and squeeze every drop of efficiency out of their chain. That takes brains. But employing it in the manner they have takes a fair amount of ruthlessness and disregard for people. Their numbers wouldn't be nearly so rosy if they'd stayed within the law and tried to take care of their employees and their suppliers. Overall, WM got to its position by hurting people.

-Dan.

Agree. I'm impressed with they're efficiency, but average pay for their employees is under $250 a week. PBS - STORE WARS: Wal-Mart Business Practices
They make profits off the backs of others.

Are you talking about part time or full time?

If you're talking full time, then that would be $6.25/hour (which we know couldn't be true since that's below minimum wage)

If you're talking part time (25-30 hours a week), then we're talking between $8.40-$10.00 which isn't bad for a high school kid or someone who's working a summer job.

If it's someone trying to rely on that as a sole source of income...they should've planned their life a little better.

I was simply talking about how Walmart makes it's profits. The main way is through low wages. That would seem to match the solution proposed by the Republicans. Get more from the poor and middle class to solve our problems. In this way both have similar philosophies.

I've worked at Wal-Mart. At least at my store, they didn't hire high school kids or people just looking for summer work. You had to be 18 and you had to be reasonably flexible with your hours - that ruled out pretty much anyone in high school.

IMO, the worst thing about working for WM is not their low wages, but their wacky scheduling. They use a computer system to algorithmically generate their shift schedules so that they can minimum staffing requirements and maximize profits. What this means to the employee is that you never work the same shift from one day to the next, which means it's difficult to get a second job.

Perhaps, but that doesn't mean WM isn't still taking advantage of the people without many options. That's not the attitude that should be guiding a government's policies.

How is that the republican policy?

Can you provide any sources that state that Republicans intend on raising taxes for the poor & middle class? (that aren't from Obama campaign slam ads) Keep in mind, lowering taxes for the wealthy doesn't automatically mean increased taxes for everyone else. With the right spending cuts, we could all get a tax cut and have a better budget than what we have now.

The one in my town is full of high school kids if you go after 4pm through the week or in the summer...might just be a location thing.

To your other comments, These things aren't unique to wal-mart though...

I worked for a regionally owned grocery store when I was in high school. My schedule was different every day as well and I was only making $0.10/hour over minimum wage (as opposed to the $1.05/hour over minimum wage walmart employees get)

Wal-Mart vs. The Morons (NOT A JOKE)

This is spot-on.
PLEASE, READ THIS TO THE END. IT IS VERY INTERESTING!!!
Wal-Mart vs. The Morons

1. Americans spend $36,000,000 at Wal-Mart Every hour of
every day.

2. This works out to $20,928 profit every minute!

3. Wal-Mart will sell more from January 1 to St. Patrick's
Day (March 17th) than Target sells all year.

4. Wal-Mart is bigger than Home Depot + Kroger + Target +Sears
+ Costco + K-Mart combined.

5. Wal-Mart employs 1.6 million people, is the world's largest
private employer, and most speak English.

6. Wal-Mart is the largest company in the history of the world.

7. Wal-Mart now sells more food than Kroger and Safeway
combined, and keep in mind they did this in only fifteen years.

8. During this same period, 31 big supermarket chains sought
bankruptcy.

9. Wal-Mart now sells more food than any other store in the
world.

10. Wal-Mart has approx 3,900 stores in the USA of which 1,906
are Super Centers; this is 1,000 more than it had five years ago.

11. This year 7.2 billion different purchasing experiences will
occur at Wal-Mart stores. (Earth's population is approximately
6.5 Billion.)

12. 90% of all Americans live within fifteen miles of a Wal-Mart.

You may think that I am complaining, but I am really laying the
ground work for suggesting that MAYBE we should hire the guys
who run Wal-Mart to fix the economy.

This should be read and understood by all Americans… Democrats,
Republicans, EVERYONE!!

To President Obama and all 535 voting members of the Legislature

It is now official that the majority of you are corrupt morons:

a.. The U.S. Postal Service was established in 1775. You have
had 237 years to get it right and it is broke.

b... Social Security was established in 1935. You have had 77
years to get it right and it is broke.
c.. Fannie Mae was established in 1938. You have had 74 years
to get it right and it is broke.

d.. War on Poverty started in 1964. You have had 48 years to
get it right; $1 trillion of our money is confiscated each
year and transferred to "the poor" and they only want more.

e.. Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965. You have
had 47 years to get it right and they are broke.

f.. Freddie Mac was established in 1970. You have had 42 years
to get it right and it is broke.

g.. The Department of Energy was created in 1977 to lessen our
dependence on foreign oil. It has ballooned to 16,000 employees
with a budget of $24 billion a year and we import more oil than
ever before. You had 35 years to get it right and it is an
abysmal failure.

You have FAILED in every "government service" you have shoved
down our throats while overspending our tax dollars.

AND YOU WANT AMERICANS TO BELIEVE YOU CAN BE TRUSTED
WITH A GOVERNMENT-RUN HEALTH CARE SYSTEM??

Folks, keep this circulating. It is very well stated. Maybe
it will end up in the e-mails of some of our "duly elected'
(they never read anything) and their staff will clue them in
on how Americans feel.
AND
I know what's wrong. We have lost our minds to "Political
Correctness" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Someone please tell me what the HELL's wrong with all the
people that run this country!!!!!!
We're "broke" & can't help our own Seniors, Veterans, Orphans,
Homeless etc.,???????????
In the last months we have provided aid to Haiti , Chile ,
Japan and Turkey..And now Pakistan ........previous home of
bin Laden. Literally, BILLIONS of DOLLARS!!!

Our retired seniors living on a 'fixed income' receive no aid
nor do they get any breaks…

AMERICA: a country where we have homeless without shelter,
children going to bed hungry, elderly going without 'needed'
meds, and mentally ill without treatment -etc,etc.

Imagine if the *GOVERNMENT* gave 'US' the same support they
give to other countries. Sad isn't it?
Here's some advice.

Next chain letter you get in your email, just delete it.
:)

I do and I am so much happier now.

Wal-Mart did all of that by paying people peanuts, forcing people to work off the clock, discriminating against women, illegal union busting, and exercising such ruthless cost-cutting and strong-arming tactics that their suppliers were forced to send manufacturing jobs overseas and put Americans out of work. Their operations in Mexico were built on bribery and corruption. The net effect of WM on its communities has been to suppress wages and kill jobs.

It is a fallacy promoted by the right that government ought to be run like a business. It should not - in fact, it's closer in purpose to a non-profit. The goal of a business is to make profit; the goal of government is to provide services. You don't provide services by forcing jobs overseas or paying your employees as little as possible and funneling all of your profits to the top.

-Dan.
This is why I don't shop there.

Go Target.

My friend's youngest brother (who's 17) works at our local one in the grocery area. $9/hour... 28 hours a week.

Is Target really any better? ;)

There's not as many NASCAR shirts (which is a plus), but in terms of their business model, they're about the same.

The novel 'Jennifer Government' covers some interesting ideas about this. In a world where everything is completely deregluted government has little to no power and corporations are literally going to war with each other.

As entities, corporations are dispassionate machines. If Walmart could literally bomb Target to eliminate the competition, why wouldn't they?

The end result of a system with no rules on corporations is one of tribes holding territories.

I don't think most people seem to understand what a government is, or why it generally insists on a monopoly on force for an organized society.

Having a government with a profit motive and share holders would mean that they could actually use force in their quest for profit. It would mean that their competition would actually be rebels, and our system of capitalism would sincerely break down..

Corporations exist to make profits and that is ALL they do.
