I thank God for all the men and women who have served and continue to serve in the US armed forces. They make many sacrifices, and I believe God has often used their service and sacrifices . . .

For a Good Cause

A day may come when our Lord temporarily allows evil forces and governments to dominate the entire planet leaving no relatively safe haven for righteousness and truth until Christ returns. But that day has not yet come. Over the last 75 years, God has three times used the US military to play a key role in restraining evil forces. These three cases have the following in common:

1. Evil forces took over some parts of the world.
2. These evil forces were extremely cruel and brought immense suffering wherever they gained power.
3. The evil governments were responsible for the widespread persecution of Christians, and in at least two out of three cases, of Jews.
4. These evil forces were seriously intent on literally taking over the world and they made massive efforts, with some success, in that direction. They brought warfare, death, and destruction to many parts of the world.
5. God was pleased to use the US military and our allies to stop them in the first two cases, and to restrain them in a still ongoing war in the third.

The First Evil: Fascism

The first of these three evils was fascism in Japan and Nazi Germany.

hitlerwins.jpg

After fascist governments took over all of Europe except for courageous England, and also conquered parts of Africa, and much of the Pacific, the US military and our allies sacrificed many lives to defeat this evil.

Approaching_Omaha.jpg

Only as Europe was liberated did we really understand just how dark these evil forces were . . .

Holocaust-survivors-Israe-008.jpg

The Second Evil: Communism

The next great threat was communism, which began to grow in power even as WWII was drawing to a close. Communist nations consistently used violence and persecution to oppose all belief in God.

PM_soviet_wideweb__470x279%252C0.jpg

Beginning in Russian and China, communism grabbed Eastern Europe and was using warfare and violent revolutions to make gains in Asia and Central America. With the Cold War came the threat of nuclear warfare. But while much of the war was “cold”, in places like Korea and Vietnam, it turned into traditional, bloody warfare.

vietnam-war-larry-burrows-01.jpg

Once again, God graciously used the US military to defeat and restrain this threat (although it still exists on a smaller scale, the threat from Russia is again growing, and the danger of communism could return).

The Third Evil: Islamic Extremism

The US Military has been ever vigilant and has had little rest. For even as Communism was waning, a new global threat was growing. Lacking the military resources to fight a large scale conventional or nuclear war, Islamic extremists have turned to worldwide terrorism as their primary tactic. They are always seeking weak and unstable nations where they can move in and gain control.

Islam%2BThreat.jpg

Once again, the men and women of the US Military have been called on to restrain this evil. This battle is still in progress.

Going Broader

While my own service was relatively brief (five years) and my sacrifices small compared to many others, I hope you will bear with me if I share just a couple of personal thoughts related to my own time in the US Navy.

For every brave soldier, sailor, marine, and airman who made the ultimate sacrifice there are many others who made smaller, but still real and meaningful, sacrifices to restrain evil in this world and keep at least parts of it free. They did not lose their lives, but they did give up a portion of their lives.

During my 5 and ½ years in the Navy, I was blessed to serve with some really excellent men on three nuclear submarines:

Sub%2Bfixed.jpg

This was near the end of the Cold War. The men I served with often worked twelve or more hours a day for weeks at a time even while in port and also spent many months away from their families while out to sea. I estimate that out of my first four years of marriage to Hope, a cumulative of about two years I was away from home port, and my experience was typical. While many young men our age were focused on just enjoying life, the men I served with were keeping a secret vigilance to protect our nation, and to some extent our world, from the threats of evil nations and nuclear war. I do not believe our enemies did not hold back from using nuclear weapons because they were nice. By God's grace, they held back because they knew we were there and they feared that we would beat them if they challenged us. The US Navy consistently proved that it dominated the world’s oceans and kept them safe.

So, I thank God for the men who I served with. I would like to mention that I am especially thankful for the senior officers and enlisted men who were patient with young junior officers like I was.

Going Deeper

The external threat to our nation is still real and intense. And yet it is not the greatest threat we face. Moral decay threatens to do what Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union, and Islamic terrorists have failed to do. If we continue on the path of increased sin and sexual immorality which we have been on the last forty years, a day may come when America ceases to be somewhat of a refuge for righteousness and a light for freedom. It is only by God’s grace that we have been used in this role up to now.

While government does have a limited role to play in maintaining morality, the only deep, lasting solution to moral decay is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. So as you rightly remember the service and sacrifices of our military this weekend, please also pray for spiritual revival, renewal, and awakening. By revival, I mean a work of the Holy Spirit resulting in a lot of people loving Jesus a lot more. That includes a lot of people getting saved, and a lot of people getting set free from sin, and a lot of people serving more and giving more and growing more for the sake of the Kingdom of Christ.

Remember our men and women who have served our nation, and remember our Lord Jesus Christ, whose sacrifice makes all other sacrifices meaningful. I would like to close with . . .

A Prayer for Veterans Day

Lord, we thank you for the way you have blessed our nation. We acknowledge that all your blessings are due to Your own great grace and certainly not because we deserve them.

Heavenly Father, we thank You that You have chosen to use our military to restrain and defeat evil forces in the world. We pray that You will guide our political leaders so that our military will always be used for just and righteous causes and will not be misused.

Lord, we thank You for all who have served and who continue to serve. We ask that You bless them. For those who came back with wounds, physical and/or emotional, we pray that You will heal and encourage them. For those who came back and have struggled to find their place since returning, we pray that You will lead them and help them to know Your love and experience Your good plans for their lives.

We also pray for those who are currently serving. Please watch over them and bring them home safely. When they are fighting in a just cause (which I believe they are), please give them victory in every battle. Please fill many of them with Your Holy Spirit so that many who encounter them will also encounter Your kindness, love, and mercy. Please always use our military to bring blessing and not harm, good and not evil, light and not darkness.

Please be with military families, who make great sacrifices. Help every wife and child whose husband or father is away serving our nation. Provide for them and keep them safe.

Heavenly Father, please bring revival to our nation. Let us continue to be a nation that is worth defending. Forgive us for going in the wrong direction in so many ways. Please don't let us continue to slide down a slope towards decay and moral darkness. We confess that we deserve judgment, but by Your great grace we ask that You give us mercy. Please renew Your churches. Move to bring many to salvation in Christ. Set people free from sin and empower them to serve You.

In Jesus Name, Amen.

Thank you for being a servant of the Lord. Thank you for your service, my brother in Christ. While I won't be too long in posting here, I wanted to bring recognition to a vet who has since passed away, that served in WW2. Twice awarded the Bronze Star and once receiving the medal of honor. His name was Desmond Doss. He was the first conscientious objector awarded such and was a 7th day Adventist. A pacifist combat medic who refused to carry a weapon into combat. His story is truly inspiring as to the testimony that the Lord truly goes before us and protects us.

I agree! His story is truly inspiring.

I also thank God for all those whose service required less heroism, but nevertheless required hard work and "regular" sacrifices - like time away from family and the comforts of home.

I second that sentiment. A lot of "regular" service guys don't get much credit for doing the day in and day out tasks of safeguarding the world community, helping to evacuate civilians from danger prone areas, humanitarian efforts and more. Nevertheless (I like this word) there are many heroes in many different walks of life. I'm glad I was able to lift you up. God bless.

One area of prayer for our current military is that it seems to me they must be stretched thin. We have had some level of constant warfare for 16 years now. We have men in multiple dangerous war zones: Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, several nations in Africa, and perhaps others like Yemen. In addition, there is a need for constantly being on guard wrt to N. Korea and Iran. And all of this is in addition to the quiet threat from Russia, which still has enough nukes to obliterate us if we do not maintain a continuous deterrent and defense. Then there's China. At the same time, budget restrictions have cramped resources. There are no simple solutions. When Jesus comes back, He'll fix it all. In the meantime, our prayers can make a difference.

Today it is popular to believe that the more patriotic you are the better Christian you will be as if the two were compatible with each other. Today's Christians are both killers and lovers of peace, they hold an M16 in one hand and an olive branch in the other. Why, when we are citizens of another country and serve a different Master. The modern Church is sick in the head and heart and do just the opposite of what Christ commanded. It will be a sad day when they stand before the Great Judge.

On the one hand, I respect my brothers and sisters in Christ who are pacifists and choose not to serve in the military. However, it is one thing to choose not to serve, it is another thing to paint so negatively and with such a broad brush those who do choose to serve.

Today it is popular to believe that the more patriotic you are the better Christian you will be as if the two were compatible with each other.

Yes, there are Christians who uncritically equate patriotism and Christianity. But there are many others who clearly understand that their allegiance is ultimately to Christ, and Him alone, and yet also see a place for serving one's nation. We realize that sometimes these may come into conflict, and if and when they do, we choose to obey God, not man. But the Bible (including the NT) does not view human government, including the use of deadly force, as a negative, but as a positive (albeit one which has often been twisted to evil uses, which is true of many of God's good gifts):

NIV Romans 13:4 For the one in authority is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God's servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer.

Today's Christians are both killers and lovers of peace, they hold an M16 in one hand and an olive branch in the other.

I am among those who believe that in general a strong US military actually increases peace in the world. It is when evil forces and governments see weakness that they are more bold to act violently. So, yes, some Christians who are serving as soldiers hold an M16 in one hand even as they hope to not need to use it and pray sincerely for peace. God bless them.

Would we prefer no Christians in the military? Would that make the military better?

Or would we prefer to have no military? I honestly believe that would quickly result in evil forces advancing. Soon, public debates such as this one would not exist, as those disagreeing with the dictator's view would be imprisoned or killed. This is not some false fear. It is what really happens around the world today and throughout history.

It will be a sad day when they stand before the Great Judge.

It is true that one day we will all stand before the one great judge. That judge will not be you or me, and we should exercise care in speculating how other Christians will be judged.

You are correct, we not need to speculate because He has written a Book in which it is said, love your enemies, turn the other cheek, do not judge (killing is the ultimate judgment against your brother), the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, vengeance is mine saith the Lord, do not return evil for evil, overcome evil with good, and many other such things, so there is no speculation. I am not speculating when I say that Christians today do not follow Christ because Jesus Himself said that in the last days good would become evil and evil good. Christ laid down His life for His enemies as example for us to follow, how is that accomplished when we judge and condemn. On the day when the Lord returns there will be very many patriotic Christian soldiers gathered in that great valley to try and impose their will on Him, they will not succeed. None of these things are written in terms hard to understand, the problem is that those words do not balance with their patriotic creeds which justify everything they wish on their enemies. You cannot serve two masters, what is so hard to understand about that?

Yes, it is true that we are called to love our enemies and not seek revenge. But just six verses after telling us not to seek revenge, we are told that it is good that government is an agent of vengeance:

Government%2Bavenge.jpg

These verses are not contradicting each other.

It is wrong for us to personally seek vengeance. It is not wrong as a part of the government (military or police) to use "the sword" to be an agent of vengeance.

If it's not right for government to do this, why does God say government is "God's servant for your good" in this very context? And if it is right, why should Christians not serve in roles in government which involve the use of "the sword"?

Don't you see how there are different roles - private and government. It is not at all inconsistent for a peace loving Christian to turn the other cheek to those who personally harm him, yet serve as a police officer or soldier to protect his neighbor from evil. And I thank God for those who do.

All governments are ordained by God but governments are not Christian they are secular just like Babylon and Persia were ruled by God's ministers but those ministers were not followers of God, they were pagan. God has put into place governments in this world made up of men of the world to govern worldly people and not Christians who are ruled by Christ. You have made God speak out of both sides of His mouth. Christians today want to be just like the world because they love the world. God told Samuel when the Israelites demanded a king like the other nations that they had not rejected Samuel but rather they had rejected God as their King. It is no different now. You can't have it both ways, God has given us a choice. For me, I have rejected the world and its politics and patriotism and live under a new constitution that overrules mere worldly rules and laws.

I agree, and this is what i alluded to with my somewhat cynical reply.
But where should we draw the line?
It's a good thing Hitler was defeated, for example.
And when you're employed as a soldier, can you not be a Christian?
Still, working for 'the war machine', executing parts of the plans concocted by the powers that (shouldn't) be, seems like a bad position to be in as a Christian...
I don't know...

You have made God speak out of both sides of His mouth.

Not at all. Actually, my view makes all of God's Word more consistent. In the Old Testament there are many examples where God approves of people fighting for good cause. Now, it is true that in some ways it seems that Jesus raises the standard, or at least reveals more clearly how high the standard is, in the Sermon on the Mount. But nothing Jesus says indicates that anything God's did Old Testament was wrong. For example, Jesus reveals that it is wrong to even look lustfully at a woman. In the Old Testament God never commanded or approved of looking lustfully at women. But God did command and approve of His people serving in the military. So my view is one in which all of God's good actions are seen as more harmonious, not less harmonious.

BTW, do you feel we were wrong to fight against Hitler in WWII?

I agree, and this is what i alluded to with my somewhat cynical reply.
But where should we draw the line?
It's a good thing Hitler was defeated, for example.
And when you're employed as a soldier, can you not be a Christian?
Still, working for 'the war machine', executing parts of the plans concocted by the powers that (shouldn't) be, seems like a bad position to be in as a Christian...
I don't know...

We draw the line at the foot of the cross. Hitler is of the world and the world will deal with their own, that is what governments are for, but Christians are not part of that world. Our flesh celebrates when we hear that evil has been put down but it is a fleshly response. It is said that even angels do not bring railing accusations against the Devil, a murderer and that God takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked, yet we Christians today hang medals and honors on those who can kill the most efficiently and who display valor in war against their brother. Primitive Christians were disallowed baptism if they continued in the ranks of the military and not a few chose death and dishonor rather than disown Christ. You cannot offer the life of Christ with one hand while taking life with the other. There is no need for confusion, read the Sermon on the Mount Chapters 5,6, and 7 of Matthew's Gospel. If we claim to be followers of Christ then we must walk as He walked. The gate is still hard to get through and the way narrow.

God inspired Paul to use serving as a soldier as a positive metaphor:

2 Timothy 2:3 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.
4 No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.

Philippians 2:25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.

It seems strange to use this type of metaphor if being an actual soldier is always wrong for a Christian.

I continue to thank God for those who have served. God has used them for much good.

Yes, i agree, but...

What if someone tried to kill your family, and already killed 1 or 2 family members?
Turn the other cheek and bless your enemy?
Or kill the enemy to save the rest of your family?
You can compare that with the allied forces stopping Hitler.
USA descends from Europe, so it's a bit like family.

What if you can only get a job as a soldier?
In the past people were drafted, they had little choice, so that's different, although you could get a job as a medic in the army too.
Should you quit being a soldier when you become a Christian?

I don't know, but i think i agree with you.

To use the O.T. as justification for war is invalid since Christ has abrogated all of that. Have you read in the N.T. where Christ said, "You have heard it said an eye for an eye but I say RESIT NOT AN EVIL PERSON." He made six of these comments so we must ask "where did they hear it said?" In the O.T. of course. Then He said, "But I say . . . ." He also said that "The law and the prophets were UNTIL John." Then in Hebrews He says again that "In the past, God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets ... .but in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son." Jesus also accused the Pharisees of not knowing the Scriptures because if they had understood them they would have known that they spoke of Him, Jesus. Would you dare to use an invalid document in your defense when you stand before the Judge?

Paul also said that the weapons of his warfare were not carnal but spiritual. And, Jesus told Pilate when asked if He was a King that if His kingdom was of this world then would His servant fight to protect Him. Of course, Paul is using the illustration of a soldier because we are soldiers, but of a different kingdom where our weapons are spiritual. Your mind is in the world so it is hard to understand where Christ and His Apostles are coming from. You need a revelation of the Holy Spirit then it will all make sense.
