i have raised trout in a big 1000 litre container, that went fine, until i got sick and they all died, but a barrel seems a little small, unless you only planning to only braise a few gold fish.

Cutting a barrel in half works really good in the garden as long as it doesn't get wet with dirt inside it, for then it rots in no time.

Composting will work, but yes you are going to need some space to roll it up and down a few times a week. It will rot though after a few years. We got a halve barrel under our veranda with a small evergreen shrub in it, that looks really neat.

Peace.

Have a several 50 gal plastic drums and one steel in storage. Using one to store water now. Will cut up a couple for plants in the near future. Haven't decided on the steel yet; originally planned to make a smoker but may use it to store fuel. I used to have 80, 5 gallon buckets on the ground (bucket garden). Buckets and drums on the ground is a good place for slugs, fyi.
