BARKSDALE AIR FORCE BASE, La. — The U.S. Air Force is preparing to put nuclear-armed bombers back on 24-hour ready alert, a status not seen since the Cold War ended in 1991.

That means the long-dormant concrete pads at the ends of this base’s 11,000-foot runway — dubbed the “Christmas tree” for their angular markings — could once again find several B-52s parked on them, laden with nuclear weapons and set to take off at a moment’s notice.

So sad that it has come to this. Old, worn-out, outdated B-52's enroute. One nuke within a 30-mile radius of South Korea would destroy Seoul and all of the troops, aircraft, and military weapons positioned near there. Pollution would have a far-reaching, ghastly impact. Drop a nuke on the 11,000 NK canon positioned along the border with SK; the northern portion of SK goes up in the cloud. Drop a couple of nukes on NK and China wipes out the remainder of SK and Guam, along with U.S. ships near there and the Philippines. Japan unfurls a white flag. Just pray for the wind there to be blowing in an opposite direction.

Key sentence: Goldfein and other senior defense officials stressed that the alert order had not been given, but that preparations were under way in anticipation that it might come.

Hence the word preparing.

kinda one of those stories that really isn't a story yet, but the headline sounds cool and will get clicks.

The very first caption under the picture, highlighted in yellow, made this clear. I didn't change the title, because people tend to complain around here about that.

For sure. Defense websites need clicks too. Flashy headlines sell!

Interesting nonetheless and thank you for sharing :)

"Goldfein and other senior defense officials stressed that the alert order had not been given, but that preparations were under way in anticipation that it might come. That decision would be made by Gen. John Hyten, the commander of U.S. Strategic Command, or Gen. Lori Robinson, the head of U.S. Northern Command. STRATCOM is in charge of the military’s nuclear forces and NORTHCOM is in charge of defending North America.:

Waste of money. There is no need for the USAF to have B-52's on ready alert and frankly, doesn't make any sense.

there is one big reason that makes sense...

The War Machine needs to be fed a steady diet of billions of dollars...

Things like this enable the State to shovel buckets full of dollars into the ever burning furnace of the Military Industrial Complex...

From a political standpoint, things like this are very destabilizing for international affairs.

If I were NK, how would I take such news?

When we do things like this, we help make the "suitcase nuke" scenario a reality. Basically, no nation on Earth can go toe to toe with us in a traditional war, thus, they would need to engage us in a non-traditional war. So, when we fluff up our muscles and trout out our nuclear arsenal in effect we incentivize States that are afraid of us to come up with contingency plans to deal with our superiority...

And one would be parking a ton of "suitcase sized nukes" all over America.

Our B-52s aren't going to be much good dealing with that...

I know, it feels good to flex muscles, but we need to be smart about it and I fear we are anything but at the moment...
