Under what circumstances is the Scripture the 'Word of God'

Hi there,

This is a sensitive topic but one that needs to be raised.

It is a strong tradition to refer to the Bible as the 'Word of God'.

Some folks on CF tend to even use Scripture as a weapon - the 'Sword of the Spirit'

You may have experienced this - raise an issue for serious consideration and the response is a barrage of Scripture - often not really addressing the issue.

It is like the Words are presented as magic...

Can I suggest this is not what the 'Word of God' is all about.

Consider the temptation of Jesus in the wilderness - Satans weapon of choice was Scripture.

Was the 'Word of God' being manifest when Satan quoted Scripture?

Absolutely not.

In fact Jesus is the 'Word of God' and Satan presumed to tempt and hopefully deceive Truth Himself with quotes from Scripture !!!

So when is the Scripture 'God's Word' ???

When the quotations are being presented under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

All too often on CF we see a battle of Scripture and this should never be so - clearly the inspiration of the Holy Spirit is not motivating the contest, players are simply holding fast to traditional theology by human loyalty, while laying claim to 'God's Word'.

The sad fact is that God's Word - Jesus is not being understood.

Jesus is sustaining all of creation as the Word of God.

Jesus is indwelling true believers and He is not silent.

The Word of God is vastly more magnificent than we could ask or think, He is supreme, we owe Him our all.

He is much more widely active than just enabling us to understand and present Scripture fruitfully. Yet some believe the Scripture is His only opportunity to be heard.

Bow down to the Living Word - Jesus

Reflect on the enormity of His power and splendour.

He wants to bring alive the words written in His special book.

Then to you it will truely be, in that moment, the Word of God.

Perhaps when the scripture records God actually speaking?

(reflecting on how Paul said that he was speaking, not the Lord)

My $0.02 is that the prophetic words of God are and were applicable to their intended recipients only. Some, as perpetual promises are still applicable, or convey unchanging truths and principles that can be reapplied. Truth is what we should be after, anyways.

Well Michael, - Jesus quoted Scripture that was not direct quotes of Himself and it would be hard to make the case that it wasn't inspired...
The teachers of the law were after Jesus because he healed during the Sabbath. According to the Bible one is not supposed to work on the Sabbath. They reserved the death penalty for those who worked during the Sabbath. Physicians were not supposed to work during the Sabbath. In Roman times some performed medical services as their job.

One should be careful not to kill the innocent with the sword of the scripture. Jesus said, “Those who live by sword will die by the sword.”

The scriptures recorded words spoken by God.
The Son of God as Logos Theos

Truth of what He intended.
I routinely would misunderstand instructions given by my Father.
He would yell, "don't do what I said, do what I meant"!
We are all what became of Adam and Eve. In Christ,
we are becoming what God intended.

for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.

The scriptures to me are testimonies to the Word of God. I don't ever refer to the scriptures as the Word of God.

What I notice is that when someone doesn't agree with someone else's interpretation of scripture and or the particular doctrine they're dedicated to, they'll pull the Word of God card.

That you're going against the Holy God Breathed Word of God.

Basically it's their way of saying that by disagreeing with their interpretation and or doctrine, you're committing sacrilege by calling God a liar and so on.

When Jesus taught that we do not live by bread alone, He was not simply instructing us
to live by the scriptures, but in the hearing of faith by knowing His Voice.

Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word[rhema] that proceeds from the mouth of God.’

Yes... that is what happened on another thread so I was prompted to raise the issue here.

'That's not biblical' is also a common cry when feathers are ruffled...

Much in every way! Chiefly because to them were committed the oracles of God.

Complete Jewish Bible
Much in every way! In the first place, the Jews were entrusted with the very words of God.
More so the NT carries that privilege...

What you describe is why my sig says what it does... alas people misunderstand that as well.

To answer your question I would say scripture becomes the Word of God when it is understood in a way that reflects the heart of God.

Yes and this continues today ..... using scripture to misrepresent God's true character .... including through churches ..... that's why scripture and meaning thereof is discussed ... and in some cases not agreed on.

We are equipped with a cutting edge of spiritual weaponry, the Holy Bible. Victory is assured if we use it properly. Our master trainer is the Holy Spirit. He is always available and He’s only a prayer away. It behooves then for all Christians to spend more time training each day .... through His Word.

Scripture is God's written word. "Every scripture is inspired by God and useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness" 2 Timothy 3:16

It is not valid to say that the Holy Spirit is not motivating the contest, players are simply holding fast to traditional theology by human loyalty, while laying claim to 'God's Word'. What is your basis for saying this, beyond your personal opinion? Which is more reasonable to accept: the Bible -- the written Word of God -- or one's personal, unqualified opinion?

some are .... maybe most .... but not all .... regardless where the teaching comes from each of us are responsible to compare with His word ....

Acts 17:11

Berean Literal Bible
Now these, who were more noble than those in Thessalonica, received the word with all readiness, on every day examining the Scriptures, whether these things were so

The scriptures are the word of God....until one is able to hear the voice of God for themselves. After this, is one then able to live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.

It is unwise to try and remove the dependency some have on books and papers and words, without offering a viable better option..... nay, instead, show us how to hear the voice of God and let us, like the Israelites, decide whether or not we want to continue to be led by the spirit.....or go back to being led by the scriptures and teaching of those who we believe are able to hear the voice of God.
