There are only two deaths spoken of in scripture. A natural or physical death, and a spiritual death. Every time you read about death it will fall within these two types of death.

We all understand what a natural or physical death is but few have any idea of what a spiritual death is/means.

So what do scriptures tell us of this spiritual death?

Well the law is a ministration of death and that law is spiritual.

Thus a spiritual death is a death by way of the law.

This can be seen in that Man was created in a state of grace

The tree of knowledge of good and evil is the law, for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

The day A & E broke Gods commandment not to eat was the day they were placed under the law which is a ministration of death and it is this death by law that that they died the day they ate thereof.

Thus by one man death came into the world.

However even in death God gave a way for man to return to that state of grace they were created in because the law is also our schoolmaster that leads to Christ.

Thus death is not the end for man but a schoolmaster that leads us back to grace in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Thus the wrath of God that is poured out upon man is the workings of the law

Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. Ro.4:15

Now we know the law is a ministration of DEATH, but it is also our schoolmaster that lead us to Christ.

Thus what God’s wrath does is minister DEATH to our old man and leads the inner man to Christ.

Thus Paul goes on to say

Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him. Ro.5:9

So what wrath are we being saved from? answer: the wrath of the law, that ministration of death.

So what does it mean to be saved from wrath? Just as we are not saved from death but out of death so too are we saved out of the wrath (the power of the law) through Christ.

We read in

Romans 3:19
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Galatians 3:23
23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed.

Galatians 4:4-5
4 But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, 5 To redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.

Galatians 5:18
18 But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.

Romans 6:14-16
14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace. 15 What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. 16 Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

Now we can understand what is stated in

Revelation 20:6
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

A thousand years is as one day, today is the day of salvation, we are to rule and reign with Christ TODAY. If we wait to rule and reign with Christ in some future time we will find ourselves being judged by the law according to our works.

Those in the first resurrection are those who are led by the Spirit, the LAW no longer has any POWER over them but they have become ONE with the law of the spirit in Christ.

"Those in the first resurrection are those who are led by the Spirit, the LAW no longer has any POWER over them but they have become ONE with the law of the spirit in Christ."

Those in the first resurrection are those who accepted Jesus as their Lord and Savior. When one does that with a sincere heart, His Spirit starts working in the believer helping them to overcome sin ... this is a life-long process. We mess up here and there. We will never be perfect in our 1st life here on earth.

What is sin? Sin is transgression of the Law. Jesus was the only one who was able to keep them (fulfill) and because of this and His sacrifice His righteousness is imputed to the believer and the believer will be seen through Christ and stand in perfection (His perfection) before Almighty God at the 1st resurrection. They will either be translated or raised from the dead and then will be changed into perfection for eternity at the 2nd coming of Jesus. Amen.

1 Corinthians 15

50Now I say this, brothers, that flesh and blood is not able to inherit the kingdom of God, nor does decay inherit immortality.

51Behold, I tell to you a mystery: We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed— 52in an instant, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.

The Return of the Lord

13Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope. 14For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, we also believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.

15By the word of the Lord, we declare to you that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who have fallen asleep. 16For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will be the first to rise. 17After that, we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord.

18Therefore encourage one another with these words.

The 2nd death happens at the 2nd resurrection (of the dead) plus satan and his minions and are those of the lost and Jesus will not stand in their stead and will not receive eternal life. God Almighty will then destroy them and the earth and He will then make everything new and establish His perfect kingdom here on the earth for eternity. Amen.

God Bless.

The problem with all that is Jesus 2000 years ago has already stood in ALL MEN or the world stead.

He is not just the saviour of some, but of ALL.

He is in the sanctuary in heaven as our high priest being an advocate for each of us (starting with Adam & Eve and onwards from there). Judgement will and I believe is taking place there. When judgement is finished then He will return and bring all the saved to heaven. We do not know when that is.

God Bless.

Revelation 20:10 the Lake of Fire this is the second death for those souls who do not want to turn around .Those who do not want to bend a knee before God are taken there and their souls are no more.

The 2nd death is the law, which is the work of the wrath of God to minister death to our old man and lead us back to Christ.

I have understood there is two deaths, the first is this life and the second is hell. Reason why I think so are:

To shine on those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death; To guide our feet into the way of peace."
Luke 1:79

Many still sit in the shadow of the law but the good thing about that is it is used to guide our feet back to Christ.

Most assuredly I tell you, he who hears my word, and believes him who sent me, has eternal life, and doesn't come into judgment, but has passed out of death into life.
John 5:24

Yes, now reread these again.

Romans 3:19
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law:that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

Revelation 20:6
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

As long as we walk in Christ we are not under the law but have pasted from death to life.

Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. If anyone was not found written in the book of life, he was cast into the lake of fire.
Revelation 20:12-15

The 2nd death is the law, which is the work of the wrath of God to minister death to our old man and lead us back to Christ. Even in death God has made a way back to Christ. Death is swallowed up in victory.

…fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Matt. 10:28

Yes, to me it is awe inspiring that God via the 2nd death will destroy our old man, for we must lose our soul in order to save it.

And also asleep. "Stop wailing," Jesus said. "She is not dead but asleep."".

yet that is still speaking of a physical death, just another way of saying it.

oops sorry could not find your quote so only went by the word asleep, then realized you must be referring to Mt.9:24 which says

He said unto them, Give place: for the maid is not dead, but sleepeth. And they laughed him to scorn.

no one is really dead when the resurrection and the life is present.

That said dead and death are two different Greek words.

The judgment of the world takes place at the cross according to Jesus.

2 Corinthians 5:10

For we must all of us appear before Christ's judgement-seat in our true characters, in order that each may then receive an award for his actions in this life, in accordance with what he has done, whether it be good or whether it be worthless.

Yes and what do you think that judgment seat is?

John 12:30-33
30 Jesus answered and said, This voice came not because of me, but for your sakes. 31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out. 32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. 33 This he said, signifying what death he should die.

NOW is the judgment of this world, this He said signifying what death He should die.
Do we not see that the judgment of this world is by the cross, for was it not by the cross that He died? If I be lifted up from the earth, I will draw all men unto me.

In the parable of the prodigal son Jesus could have used any words He wanted to describe the son but the Father described the son twice like this: Luke 15: 31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’

So Deity can define death as being what?

So Deity can define death as being what?
I'll just name three.
Dead in fellowship with someone you have a relationship with. As it was with the Father and his prodigal son.

And dead, as in separation of the spirit from the body.
JAM 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead,

Then there is the crucifying of the 'sinful flesh nature' as we loose our soulish life (mind) to participate in the life of Christ in us, putting on the "mind of Christ".

1 Corinthians 15:31 I protest by your rejoicing which I have in Christ Jesus our Lord, I die daily.

Matthew 16:25 For whoever would save his life (psuche/soul) will lose it, and whoever loses his life (psuche/soul) for my sake will find it.

So what do we do with multiple definitions from Deity concerning death?

We can begin by "rightly dividing the word of truth" in the application of our understanding of the truth.

Dead and death as I already pointed out are two different Greek words. I am speaking of death not the dead.
And your understanding goes hand in hand with the realization that their is a resurrection from the living death, and those buried in death also. And yet both Greek words get translated as "resurrection" in the following verses.

PHI 3:10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection/anastasis, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection/exanastasis of the dead.

Carnal minded translating has robbed the church of spiritual understanding. And then they want to tell others that we are wrong because; "(they) I believe the bible which is the infallible word of God."....Yeah....right.

A spiritual understanding of the verses above enlightened my heart as to why verse 11 never 'sit well' with my spirit, every time I read it.

PHI 3:12 Not that I have already obtained this (resurrection) or am already perfect; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

I used to read that verse and think; 'Of course you aren't resurrected Paul, you were still alive when you wrote this, how stupid are you to even say this????' Now I know where 'stupid' lies, and it isn't at the feet of Paul.....but at the end of the pen of modern day scribes writing hundreds of different translations and selling infallible bibles.
