  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

K, I was looking at a new series on Showtime called Dexter. It's about a serial killer's life and I guess that since he mainly just hacks up the bad people who deserve punishment, it somehow builds a compassion for the serial killer's character.
It reminds me of Hannibal in a way - if they only kill the bad people, it makes murder more acceptable.

I somehow have a problem with this concept of sympathy - but it works.

Don't have Showtime - sounds like an interesting premise.

I watch so little regular t.v. that I'm not in a good position to say what should go. As long as I have my HGTV & Food Network then I'm pretty much ok. Of network t.v. I don't think I watch anything new - a couple of series that are 1-2 years old, the rest are >5 years old. And no sitcoms - so many of them denigrate the family for "humor's sake" that I don't waste my time with them at all.

I'm going to be very interested in other folks input here.

I do agree that the writers on the show want Dexter to be a sympathetic character - which is to be expected (that has to be the case for a show to connect with viewers). But I don't believe they are trying to glamorize murder.

Dexter suffered a horrific event as a child, and the show is a study of how he copes with this dark nature within himself. He's a mess, and there is nothing really glamorous about it. This is an extreme case of a pretty universal theme.

I am intrigued by shows that are able to make sympathetic characters out of seemingly unusual candidates. Another favorite of mine is Big Love.

Make it simple, cancel the entire link
to the TV, cable, satellite, etc.

We did. No Tv for over a year now.
What new freedom that brought!!!

If you are watching TV at all, there is
no escape from garbage, including
commercials.

What's not ONLINE? And you don't
have to put up with anything you choose
not to see or hear.

I do watch TV, So I am going to voice my thoughts of what I have watched. :) When I am convicted after watching it, then I know I shouldn't be watching it anymore.

Some of the shows I have seen, and thought should be canceled are:

Family Guy- BAD, very bad. I thought It was a cartoon and was going to be cute, the showtune on the opening start talks about Tv in general like what should not be allowed on TV, violence, and so on then it goes on to say where are the good family values. So you watch then BAM , lets just say I was convicted and did Not want to watch again.

Thats the main one for now, I Am Sure I Can think of more!

I went to a seminar in the early 70's when I first came to Christ..It was called "Practicing the presence of Christ..It taught me to remember Christ is present seeing all I do, see and hear and say..It really helped me in choosing what I read, saw,did or spoke..I still remember it to this day..It also really helped me to bring my thoughts captive to Christ..Shalom..Kim

And what if one is studying where society is being brought to by the powers that be? TV plays a huge part.

I DO study things like this though i actually watch little tv, i do on occasion watch, and i have watched selected shows for long periods of time to specifically study them. I tend to study most everything.

To just make blanket judgements on people watching tv is wrong imo. Some people wouldnt believe television to be a sin at all because they dont watch but certain things.

Many people seem to be of the opinion that television reflects society. I am of the opinion it is used rather to lead society...

I'm not sure what you would do with the huge gap it would make, but all the gossip shows should go:

Springer
Oprah - and the like.
Oh boy, AMEN to this one! Springer... can I just say this, do the "guests" who go on stage to share how many kids they have thru different fathers NOT know that someone's going to try to beat them up?

I can truthfully say that if I got a fone call from Springer's people to ask if I'd be a "guest" on that show, I just might be inclined to say No thanks.

Maury Povich is nearly always about people not knowing who the father of their baby is. :o :help:
