Turkey downs Russian warplane near Syria border

Nato-member Turkey has shot down a Russian warplane in the first time the alliance and Moscow have come to blows directly over the crisis in Syria.

Ankara and Moscow gave conflicting accounts of the incident, which appears to have occurred in an area near the Turkish-Syrian border straddling Iskenderun and Latakia.

This is a delicate moment. Putin will be furious, and to maintain his tough guy image with nationalists at home, will want to be seen to be doing something in response.

If the Turks are correct, and can show that the plane was over their airspace, and did ignore many warnings, then the Russians might be left with no choice but to admit an error, though they will still be angry with the Turks for taking this action. But if the Russians are correct, and the plane was over Syria, then the Turks will need to eat some humble pie. The plane apparently crashed near to a refugee camp in Syria, close to the Turkish border, so that doesn't really tell us too much about where it was flying.

The Turks have been particulartly angry with Russia for targeting Turkmen rebels in Syria - a community who are ethnically close to Turks, and who Ankara has been supporting. Putin might suspect the Turks did this deliberatly to support their allies in Syria.

One of the airmen is apparently dead, and the other has been captured by the Turkmen rebels. This is nowhere near as bad as being captured by ISIS, but given that Russia has been bombing them, they're unlikely to be inclined to treat him well. If the Turks have made some sort of error here, one way they could start to make amends is by using their influence over the Turkmen to get this guy out safely.

Last news were that russia destroyed 500 turkish trucks that helped ISIS to sell illegal oil. I hope russia strikes back.

You forget to say that Gabriel called turkey unpredictable and that Gabriel did not denie that russia violated the airspace.
