So both sides of the aisle had a meeting yesterday in regards to border security and DACA. Pretty smart Trump had the media there for the whole meeting. He's letting the public see that he wants to get things done so it kind of points out the ones that don't.

If Trump agrees to anything close to amnesty for the Dreamers, half of his base (which has remained loyal through everything up to now) will abandon him.

Even worse would be to agree to it on the promise that the wall will be built. All it would take to foil that project is for some partisan judge or judges to rule on any one of a dozen issues that could be raised with respect to the environment, eminent domain, interstate commerce, or who knows what, to nullify that. But there would be no going back with the Dreamers at that point.

You are whistling past the graveyard with this one, Bob. Thing is, I'm not sure if Trump is fully aware of the consequences of folding on this particular issue. He didnt campaign on giving DACA people what they want, but he DID campaign against illegal immigration, and this would be seen as a betrayal of the first order!

In addition, it would be seen as a sellout to the Establishment NeverTrumpers who want only to have as many laborers as possible at the lowest possible price, even if that dispossesses Americans. None of that will fly with the base.

The issue isn't terribly high on the list of concerns among Americans overall, but it is #1 or 2 with most of his base.

Someone who cares for people will do what he can to get them decent jobs and more income, and if you don't think there's been progress on that issue thanks to a lot of work by the president, youre reading the wrong newspapers.

But one thing is certain--Donald Trump did not give up a very successful business, spend a lot of his own money, endure the hateful attacks of political opponents and just plain misinformed constituents in order NOT to help Americans whom he felt needed it (and so did all the rest of us, if truth be told). As politicians go, that is very uncommon.
