Trump preferred over Lincoln by Republicans: poll

Who is the best Republican president between Donald Trump and Abraham Lincoln? For most Republican respondents to a recent poll, the answer is Trump.

In response to the question, “Which Republican president was better?,” more than half (53 percent) of GOP respondents answered “Trump,” while 47 percent answered “Lincoln.”
Many Republicans are unfavorable toward Lincoln anyway, ... because he was the architect of the defeat of the Confederacy ...

Actually, we think that to be a good thing.
Maybe you don't know many?

And Lincoln was a great President.
Just seems Trump is preferred.

What do you expect from people who fought a long and bloody war against Lincoln and what he stood for?

Don't think those are the ones we are talking about here?

What % are you talking about?
2% to 5% probably at the very most.
Yet, the only ones they mention.

oof. You guys should’ve buried that one. There’s no way that makes Republicans look good.

Loyal sons and daughters of the Lost Cause? Bible-Belt Evangelicals? Of course that's who we're talking about.

Since the South is now the heart of the Republican Party, you are probably correct.

Have never attended a Church who put them down.
Bible believers.

I expect you haven't. I would never expect a conservative Evangelical church to put down the Lost Cause. Some that I have attended as a visitor actively championed it.

That figures.Lincoln was more into unity of the union while half of the country was wanting division instead of one nation under God. It is sad that the MAGA crowd today want to go back to that division to the point of desiring another civil war. Trump encourages that mentality so naturally they prefer him to Lincoln.

One of the most durable myths in recent history is that the religious right, the coalition of conservative evangelicals and fundamentalists, emerged as a political movement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling legalizing abortion.

....But the abortion myth quickly collapses under historical scrutiny. In fact, it wasn’t until 1979—a full six years after Roe—that evangelical leaders, at the behest of conservative activist Paul Weyrich, seized on abortion not for moral reasons, but as a rallying-cry to deny President Jimmy Carter a second term. Why? Because the anti-abortion crusade was more palatable than the religious right’s real motive: protecting segregated schools.

So much for the Republican Party. It is now Trump's party for sure, now that many of the sanest Republicans can't bring themselves to identify as Republican any more. The question is whether the party can return to normalcy once Trump is (eventually) gone, and whether any of those who abandoned the ship will come back.

That is actually the most incredibly ignorant comment I have ever read on this website. It demonstrates an absolute hatred for people of a political party simply because you disagree with their politics as well as a complete lack of understanding of the political aspects of the Civil War. I feel sorry for you and your obvious inability to grasp the historical significance of the Republican Party's support of Lincoln and his actions in defeating the Confederacy.

I wouldn’t previously have agreed with the comment to which you responded, but with the way the numbers have shaken out in this Trump-Lincoln poll, I have to wonder.
