Trump sends mixed signals on immigration reform

At a meeting with TV news anchors, Trump talked about an immigration bill that could allow some illegals to remain in the U.S. legally.

"At the meeting with television anchors, Trump suggested he is willing to address legal status for those who are in the country illegally but have not committed crimes. But he would not necessarily support a pathway to citizenship, except perhaps for "Dreamers," a group of nearly 2 million who were brought into the country illegally as children."

One wonders why Trump may be having a change of heart. Is he realizing that many illegal immigrants do necessary work that others don't want to do? And that they do it well?

I would make a path for some to return, but they are all breaking the law and should be deported. No amnesty. And especially no 'bring the family' plans for illegals.

And jail time for any who interfere or fail to comply with immigration officials and immigration laws.

It may be that even Trump is beginning to realize that doing it your way is not going to work. If illegal immigrants are integrated into our society and economy, it may be difficult if not impossible to extract them. The issues of immigrants brought here at a young age by parents, and of illegals who are parents to children who are citizens, are two tough situations that are not easily resolved via deportation.

That's like saying bank robbers, if they stay clean for a few years, should be able to confess and have nothing done to them. The parents knew what they were doing, even if the kids didn't. And as nobody likes to break up families, send them all home and sort it out there. Then if there is a good reason to accept them back, move them to the front of the line, but make them go through the process.
