From the beginning President Trump took a diversified approach, with the U.S.backing 2 potential vaccines in each of multiple categories as part of Operation Warp speed and a goal and belief that a vaccine would be ready by the end of this year. Trump has taken an enormous amount of criticism for even suggesting such a goal, with so many from the left saying it was impossible. In early November no vaccine had been approved, although the Moderna vaccine looked promising. Betting American lives on just one vaccine would have been totally irresponsible--there could problems with the vaccine itself or supply chain issues, or unforseen delays, or distribution problems. What Trump also has done is issue an executive order to make sure vaccines purchased by the United States go to the United States. This buys time for U.S. health care works and the elderly and others particularly vulnerable, and many of these will be vaccinated before, if he becomes president, Biden potentially rescinds this order. It is no secret that Biden Covid advisor Dr. Zeke Emanuel wants to give away vaccines purchased by the U.S. to other countries and vaccinate younger people since he believes they would have
longer lifespans. Emanuel was a key author of Obamacare and as such might have great influence on Biden.
