From the "One has to admire the art of the deal", files: Trump considering skipping general election debates in 2020: report

According to the sources, Trump doesn't trust the Commission on Presidential Debates, the nonprofit organization that puts on the debates. Specifically, Trump is apprehensive of who will be chosen by the organization to moderate the debates, the Times reports.

Noting that the incumbent always decides whether or not a debate happens, and in this case it appears that Trump will even dictate the terms of any such debate. Considering how CNN deliberately sabotaged previous Republican presidential contenders, one suspects that any debates this time around will be managed considerably differently.

Well, I guess not having any debates at all does count as "managed considerably differently"

No surprise. The last time he went to a public event it didn’t go so good for him.

Good move by the President. He’ll not have a loser like HRC opposing him next time.
Good point! This time Trump will have to face the indefatigable Joe Biden, or the self-declared Native American Elizabeth Warren, or the youthful Bernie Sanders, or the personable Michael Bloomberg, or maybe even the worldly and wise Pete Buttigieg.

Any one of these people can easily up-stage The Donald in a debate, amiright?

Most anyone capable of reading a typical newspaper and speak English at the Middle School level can wipe the floor with Trump in a debate.

I can't agree with this. Yes, if it was being judged like a College Debate, with some type of jury or panel judging the facts and details of the arguments of each side, Trump would lose badly. What many people forget, though, is that Trump is a Populist. The people who respond to him don't care if he doesn't answer the question, if he goes off on unrelated tangents, or if his arguments can't hold water.

Instead, Trump tells people what they want to hear. He relies on "sound bites" like "Make America Great Again," "Lock Her Up," and whatever new slogans he'll have for the 2020 Democratic nominee.

I'll agree that, much like impeachment polls, Trump will not win a debate but he won't "lose" them either. His base will still love his performance, regardless of how Trump does based on debate "standards" (the standards under which a competitive debate is judged). His base will love whatever he says, particularly the more controversial things and love him for it. The spin doctors will note how Trump's performance excited his base, and that he didn't lose -- like those who claim Trump "can't debate" predicted.

The final "spin" by Republicans, since Trump did "better than expected" will be that he "won" (because he didn't lose).

Once again Trump is so transparent we can all see right through him.
Faster than a tweeting insult. More powerful than a hidden motive. Cheats at golf every round! Look it up in Breitbart. It’s a bluff, it’s a flame... it’s Transparentman!

He will remain in office. No need for debates.

I guess I failed to underestimate his core supporters like Propaganda Minister Hannity

NightHawkeye,
I'm going to guess that what you reported might happen, but not if it's Biden who emerges as the Democratic nominee. The president couldn't pass up an opportunity like that one!

A most excellent point I hadn't considered.
