Trump said:
The Senate must go to a 51 vote majority instead of current 60 votes. Even parts of full Repeal need 60. 8 Dems control Senate. Crazy!

It is certainly a reasonable point. Even if we were to think that the filibuster is in the best traditions of democracy (!), it has only been in recent years that the Senators who are in the minority don't have to actually filibuster. They simply have to say they are going to, and the effective majority instantly becomes 60. Even at that, the number needed for a filibuster was 67 not long ago--until the Senate reduced the number needed for a filibuster.

But OTOH, it isn't news that the party which, ironically, bears the name Democratic would once again be opposed to democracy.

Donald is whining over the most recent failure of the GOP's Health "care" bill...

Question: how many Democrat votes would the GOP have needed to win over in order to pass it?

Puh-lease...

So says the party that waited over a year without even considering Merrick Garland for the Supreme Court? That exceeded the longest vacancy in history by about 6 months, and was the biggest obstruction ever.

Perhaps, Albion, Democrats were taught by the master of obstruction, Mitch McConnell.

That's a nice talking point you have there, but the massive rise in use of the filibuster started with the Republicans blocking Obama's proposals.

Personally, I think we should go back to a time when filibustering meant actually standing up and talking.

Perhaps adding to the discussion by taking on the proposal for passing legislation with a simple majority would be good. You know--the topic of this thread?

This dangerous and misguided legislation, opposed by 88% of Americans polled, immediately after an election in which foreign interference by am enemy nation played a part, underscores the need for the 60 vote filibuster role.

And Republicans, knowing how tenuous the reign of the 268 most hated people on America is, won't monkey around with it.

What I don't get is why the lawmakers don't understand why the people are opposed to the GOP plan. It eliminates the pre-existing condition section; it is projected to increase health care costs; it is projected to decrease spending for Medicare and Medicaid; and it is projected to increase the federal debt. Even if I were a died-in-the-wool Republican, why on earth would I put my name on something that's obviously bad for the country? Can't all these lawyers figure out the same thing?
That's easy for you to say, you don't have to answer to your donors when you try to get reelected.

As a taxpayer who wishes her entire national and state delegations, governor included, could get paid for staying home, I represent many of the completely voiceless Americans who see their government going down the tubes because of voter suppression, Citizens United, gerrymandering, etc. The filibuster is a safety valve until our country regain s it's sanity.

Do you know, btw, that progressives are more mobilized at this point of the Trump administration than the tea party was I'm 2009? People are getting ready to take America back.

The Senate parliamentarian says otherwise....

It will be harder to get 51 votes while McCain is away from the Senate.

In any case, polls show that 88% of Americans are cheering the fact that their faithless representatives are unable to pass legislation that citizens don't want, legislation that will throw most of them into extreme economic hardship.

Let's cheer for democracy--let's pray for continued roadblocks to representatives who aren't representing their voters.
Whatever is stopping the republicans from enacting their laws is anything but democracy.

What was it called when Republicans obstructed proposed legislation between 2010 and 2016.

I'll give you a hint: "Anything but democracy...."

And the difference between what they opposed and what the Democrats are currently proposing is that only 12% of Americans want to see the ACA repealed and/or repealed and replaced with something wholly, entirely and completely inadequate.

A special counsel isn't appointed and given permission to hire the foremost experts in forensic accounting, information technology and other specialties because of a "conspiracy theory..."

The Republicans can't get 50 votes. Why is 60 even an issue at this point?
