I guess that depends on the financial condition of Rome. Rome is a city, and if they are in desperate financial straits then charity begins at home.

So the question is, how is Rome doing financially as of late?

You can't criticize without all the facts, and if Rome is doing poorly financially then this might be a necessary step... sure charity is nice, but you have to weigh when giving is possible, and when it's not.

I tossed coins there..when I visited Rome some time ago.
- Does it mean I made contribution to infrastructure maintenance?

Was your intention for throwing coins in the fountain to give that money to a Catholic ran charity?

Or did you throw coins in for "good luck" (the return of Rome, love and or marriage) because it's traditionally done and you were a visitor doing the whole tourism thing?

If to do the whole tourism thing why does it matter if the money is used for upkeep of the monuments you enjoyed visiting so they are around for your children and grandchildren to potentially see?

If your intention was to give to a Catholic charity why don't you mail in your two or three quarters instead of throwing it into some water for someone to have to fish out..
