WASHINGTON UPDATE

CONGRESS ON RECESS–IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED

Congress will be on Easter recess for two weeks (March 22-April 9) .
During this time Members of the House and Senate will hold town hall
meetings. This is the time to speak to your elected officials about a
range of issues. Contact your US Representative and US Senator to find
out when and where they will be meeting with constituents:
http://64.55.184.74/tvc1/congress.php
Use this opportunity to discuss issues that will be coming up for a vote
when they return to Washington.

1) Your opposition to:

*human cloning
*homosexual quota bill known as ENDA-the Employment Non-Discrimination Act
*hate crimes legislation

2) Your support for the President's welfare reform package which
includes:
*increased funding for abstinence until marriage—also, the definition of
abstinence in Title V of welfare reform must not be altered to include
the promotion of contraceptives.
*the promotion of healthy marriage

3) Other issues to support are:

*Child Custody Protection Act
*Making the Marriage Tax Cut permanent.
See legislative items below.

B. REMEMBER CHARLES PICKERING'S TREATMENT BY SENATE LIBERALS
Senate liberals on the Judiciary Committee blocked the nomination of
conservative Christian Charles Pickering to be a Federal Appeals Court
Judge—because he was a conservative and a Christian. Senator Chuck
Schumer (D-NY) admitted this during the final vote on Pickering last
week. All ten Democrats voted against Pickering; all nine Republicans
voted for him.

According to Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT): "It is no secret that many
consider the smear campaign waged against Judge Pickering to be merely a
warm-up battle for the ideological war that the left-of-mainstream
special interest groups will wage to block any Supreme Court nominee
that President Bush may have the opportunity to nominate."

For a list of the members of this committee, go to:
http://judiciary.senate.gov/members.cfm If one of these Senators
represents you, and he opposed the vote, please contact him and express
your outrage about his vote.

C. LEGISLATORS VOICE SUPPORT FOR INTELLIGENT DESIGN
Two U.S. Congressmen from Ohio have recently informed the Board of
Education that federal law requires that its new science standards
prohibit censoring debate on such controversial issues as evolution or
intelligent design. The letters from John A. Boehner and Steve Chabot
were sent after a state debate over the science standards. Evolutionists
in Ohio are trying to stifle debate over intelligent design. Rep.
Boehner is Chairman of the House Education and Workforce Committee and
Rep. Chabot is Chairman of the House Judiciary Constitution
Subcommittee.

The letter says in part, "Students should be allowed to hear the
scientific arguments on more than one side of a controversial topic.
Censorship of opposing points of view retards true scholarship and
prevents students from developing their critical thinking skills." For
more on this controversy, go to:
http://www.washtimes.com/national/20020320-76260745.htm

D. PRO-HOMOSEXUAL REP. CALLS FOR "NATIONAL DAY OF SILENCE"
New York Congressman Eliot L. Engel has just offered a congressional
joint resolution that will celebrate a "National Day of Silence" for
homosexual students on high school campuses. The National Day of Silence
is sponsored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN),
the organization that promotes the recruitment of children as young as 5
years old into the homosexual lifestyle. GLSEN was also involved in a
scandal in Massachusetts in 2000 where GLSEN workshop teachers taught
teens how to "fist" their sexual partners and to ingest body fluids
during oral sex. (See Item 10 for more details on GLSEN's efforts to
corrupt the morals of children.)

Contact your U.S. Congressman and ask that he or she NOT support Engel's
homosexual propaganda efforts.

E. TRUTH MUST BE TOLD ABOUT DANGERS OF CLONING
Senator Sam Brownback (R-KS) says the truth must get out about the
dangers of cloning before the Senate votes on legislation banning the
practice next month. Brownback is sponsor of S. 1899 The Human Cloning
Prohibition Act Of 2001, which would ban all human cloning. Only one
Democrat has signed on as a co-sponsor to his legislation, Senator Mary
Landrieu (LA).

Some people want to use cloning to produce live-born children who are
"copies" of living or deceased people. Others would use it to
mass-produce human embryos to be destroyed in medical research. The
Human Cloning Prohibition Act (S. 1899, H.R. 2505) will ban human
cloning for either purpose. (S. 1899, which is identical to H.R. 2505,
supercedes the earlier Senate bill, S. 790.) The U.S. House of
Representatives has already passed H.R. 2505. That measure or its Senate
companion, S. 1899, awaits a Senate vote. President Bush says he will
sign the Act into law. Human cloning is an effort to create humans as
"copies" of other humans. It is done by taking genetic material from a
person's body cell and injecting it into an egg, which is then
stimulated to begin embryonic development. The cloned embryo is almost
identical genetically to the person whose body cell was used. Human
cloning is wrong, because it dehumanizes human reproduction. All cloning
treats human beings as products, as mere carriers of traits that others
find useful. Cloning human embryos for research (so-called "therapeutic
cloning") demeans life, by creating new human lives solely to destroy
them. Cloning embryos for live birth (so-called "reproductive cloning")
violates human dignity, robbing the child of a real mother and father
and of his or her own personal destiny. Moreover, attempts at live birth
will require the "trial and error" deaths of countless human embryos.
Dolly the cloned sheep was born after 276 failed attempts. The few
cloned humans who survive may suffer from devastating health problems.
Banning only so-called "reproductive" cloning (the live birth of human
clones) is wrong, because it authorizes cloning to make embryos so they
can be killed for experimentation. This is not a ban on cloning at all.
It allows cloning, then requires all cloned humans to be killed at a
certain stage. This approach is not even effective in preventing the
birth of clones: Once cloned embryos are readily available in
laboratories, they will easily be implanted in wombs; then the only way
to enforce the ban will be to force women to undergo abortions. A full
ban on human cloning will not interfere with medical research, because
cloning embryos for stem cell experimentation is increasingly recognized
as a wasteful, unreliable and unnecessary path to medical research. The
most beneficial stem cell research today uses stem cells from adult
tissue, umbilical cords and other sources that involve no harm to human
life. New cures for disease can be pursued without creating human lives
in the laboratory solely to destroy them. The effective and morally
acceptable way to prevent human cloning is to forbid its use to make new
humans in the first place. The Human Cloning Prohibition Act of 2001 (S.
1899, H.R. 2505) will achieve this important goal.

F. CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM
Wednesday, March 20 was another bad day in the US Senate for the
Constitution. The Senate passed their campaign finance bill 60-40, with
48 Democrats and 11 Republicans and 1 Independent voting for the bill.
The two lone Democrats who opposed the bill were Senators John Breaux
(LA) and Ben Nelson (NE). Traditional Values Coalition has joined other
groups asking the President Bush to veto the bill. Unfortunately, Bush
has said he will sign the bill even though he thinks it is "flawed."
However, the measure still faces a round of court challenges before it
can take effect. TVC believes that restrictions and regulations imposed
by this legislation on how outside groups operate are unconstitutional.
If this law takes effect, the voter education materials that TVC
distributes will be outlawed. In addition, many of the strategy meetings
we attend with Members of Congress will become illegal as well.

G. FEDERALLY-FUNDED HOMOSEXUAL FLIRTING WORKSHOPS CONTINUE
Despite an investigation by the Health and Human Services Inspector
General Janet Rehnquist, homosexual activist groups are continuing to
use federal tax dollars to fund flirting workshops and other
sexually-perverted activities as part of "AIDS education" projects.
Rehnquist is now expanding her investigation to examine all CDC-funded
projects to see how many tax dollars are being wasted on obscene
workshops that have nothing to do with AIDS education.

San Francisco homosexual groups get at least $400 million a year on AIDS
prevention programs. Most of this money is wasted on flirting, cruising
seminars, or workshops teaching men how to have better anal or oral
intercourse.

TVC's Special Report on this controversy provides more details:

H. CHILD CUSTODY PROTECTION ACT HEARING TURNS INTO A CIRCUS
This week the House Judiciary Committee approved H.R. 476 the Child
Custody Protection Act, which would make it a crime to take a pregnant
girl across state lines to circumvent laws that require parental consent
for abortions. It is expected to reach the House floor shortly after the
Easter break -early April. Those convicted of the crime could face up to
one year in prison and a fine of $100,000. At least 23 states have
adopted parental consent laws relating to abortion decisions. The
mark-up turned into a bit of a circus and almost physical when
Representative Maxine Waters (D-CA) threw a microphone across the table
because she did not like the process.

2. ROSIE WAGES WAR AGAINST CHILDREN
Homosexual activist and talk show host Rosie O'Donnell has teamed up
with the ACLU to overturn Florida's ban on same-sex adoptions.

Rev. Sheldon's commentary this week provides more details on this case
at: http://64.55.184.74/tvc1/categories.php?op=newindex&catid=9

We are also posting a resource list for reliable information on the
dangers of same-sex parenting on our TVC web site. Check our home page
for details.

TAKE ACTION: Homosexual activists are bombarding Florida Governor Jeb
Bush with emails and letters asking him to support homosexual adoptions.
Email your comments to Gov. Bush at: fl_governor@myflorida.com.

Homosexual activists in Colorado are also attempting to redefine the
family by altering how birth certificates are issued. A judge in Boulder
is allowing homosexual couples to be listed as the "parents" on infant's
birth certificates. State Rep. Pam Rhodes (R-57th) is trying to get
legislation passed to prohibit this anti-family practice. For details,
go to:
http://www.family.org/cforum/state/article/a0020025.html

3. TVC'S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SPEAKS OUT ON HOMOSEXUAL ADOPTION
The "Washington Times" has just reported on the status of homosexual
adoption laws in various states. Andrea Lafferty, executive director of
Traditional Values Coalition spoke out against normalizing homosexual
adoptions. She noted: "People need to understand that it's no longer
just gay and lesbian [adoption]. It's no longer bisexual, it's
transgender. And those are the environments that are best for kids?" To

4. JUSTICE DEPARTMENT CRACKS YAHOO! CHILD inappropriate content RING
After more than a year on the investigation, the FBI made 89 arrests in
26 states for individuals guilty of possessing or distributing child
inappropriate contentography. More arrests are expected. The FBI also closed down the
Yahoo! child inappropriate contentography site with more than 7,000 members. Agents
tracked email addresses from those who had registered on Yahoo! The
American Family Association has been pushing the Justice Department to
crack down on child inappropriate contentographers and adult inappropriate content on Yahoo! forums. For
details, go to:
http://www.afa.net/activism/aa031902.asp

5. CALIFORNIA MAY ELIMINATE CHRISTIAN FOSTER PARENTS
Radical pro-homosexual legislators in California are not only promoting
homosexuality in California's public schools, now they're going after
Christian foster parents. Assemblywoman Judy Chu of Monterey Park is
sponsoring AB 2651, a bill that will turn foster homes into training
grounds for homosexuality.

Chu's bill says: "This bill would require the Department [of Social
Services] to adopt regulations, as specified, regarding gay or lesbian
youth who are in foster care, including training requirements for foster
parents and foster care staff."

This legislation would force Christian foster parents into promoting
homosexuality or they will have to stop being foster parents. No where
in this legislation is there a requirement that foster parents describe
the dangerous health risks associated with homosexual behavior!
Christians in California must rally to defeat this dangerous
legislation!

This effort to turn foster homes into recruitment programs for
homosexuals is now part of the overall homosexual agenda. But there's
more. Beverly Sheldon recently attended a "Sexual Orientation Law
Conference" at the UCLA School of Law. She heard homosexual activists
openly stating that homes where the parents are "religious" should be
banned from being foster parents. This is not just limited to parents
who may object to homosexuality—but to any religious parents!

The goal is to strip Christians and religious individuals of the right
to provide loving homes for troubled children. If you live in
California, please let your legislators know you oppose AB 2651! To find
your legislator, go to: http://www.assembly.ca.gov/acs/defaulttext.asp

TAKE ACTION: Go to our web site and download more information on this
threat to Christians. We have created a church bulletin insert for
downloading as well. Access this information at:
http://64.55.184.74/tvc1/article.php?sid=263

6. CITY HALL VOTES TO POST "IN GOD WE TRUST" ON BUILDING
The city of Bakersfield, California is going to be posting our national
motto, "In God We Trust" on its building within the next few months.
Bakersfield Mayor Harvey Hall recently noted, "I was brought up in a
Christian home. I certainly believe in God." A newly-passed law in
Michigan also encourages the posting of "In God We Trust" on public
buildings and the Virginia legislature recently passed a bill requiring
the state's public schools to post this motto in prominent places.

http://www.latimes.com/templates/misc/printstory.jsp?slug=la-000019788mar18

7. UNITED WAY GROUPS DEFUND BOY SCOUTS
The "Washington Times" has recently reported that at least 39 United Way
groups have stopped funding the Boy Scouts over this group's refusal to
allow homosexuals as members or in leadership positions. To read more
about this effort to punish the Boy Scouts for protecting children from
sexual predators, go to:
http://www.washtimes.com/national/20020315-89235476.htm

Let the United Way know how you feel about their policy. United Way
contact information is available at:
http://national.unitedway.org/webmastr.cfm

You may wish to point out to the United Way that one of the most recent
cases of a closeted homosexual molesting boys in the Boy Scouts occurred
in Springfield, Oregon. Police arrested Steven Jeremy Freeman in late
February on charges of molesting ten Cub Scouts under his authority.

Freeman faces six counts of sodomy, six counts of sexual abuse, three
counts of encouraging child sex abuse and one count of unlawful
penetration with a foreign object. Freeman was a Cub Scout leader and an
assistant leader for a Boy Scout troop. His bail is set at $2.8 million.
This is why the Boy Scouts refuses to allow open homosexuals to serve in
their organization.

8. TAKE A STAND AGAINST SEX-SATURATED "LEAP OF FAITH"
The Parents Television Council is urging concerned parents to contact
the FCC and advertisers to protest the sex-saturated NBC program called
"Leap of Faith." This show was created by a former "Sex And The City"
scriptwriter Jenny Bicks. For more details on this, go to:
http://www.parentstv.org/action/petitionleapoffaith.asp

The "Advocate," a "mainstream" homosexual magazine reported on Feb. 14,
2001 that the producers of "Sex And The City" were both homosexuals
(Darren Star and Michael Patrick King) and indirectly suggested that
writers John Melfi and Jenny Bicks were also homosexuals.

9. RINO REPUBLICAN JANE SWIFT DROPS OUT OF MASS. RACE
Pro-homosexual, pro-abortion Massachusetts Governor Jane Swift has just
dropped out of the campaign for re-election in the fall. Swift's poll
numbers plunged after Mitt Romney announced his intention to challenge
her in the Republican primary. Swift had chosen an open homosexual to be
her running mate. Romney was the organizer of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
For more on this, go to Cybercast News Service's story:
http://www.cnsnews.com/Politics/Archive/200203/POL20020319f.html

10. POLL INDICATES STRONG PRO-LIFE PRESENCE IN MINNESOTA
A poll conducted by Minnesota Citizens Concerned for Life shows strong
support for a pro-life legislative agenda in the Minnesota legislature
and for candidates who support that agenda. "The results are very
clear—Minnesota is pro-life," said Scott Fischbach, MCCL executive
director. For details on this poll, go to:
http://www.mccl.org/nr031802.htm

11. GLSEN PUSHES "DAY OF SILENCE" ON HIGH SCHOOL CAMPUSES
The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) is promoting a
"Day of Silence" on high school campuses on April 10. The goal is to
dramatize the supposed fear and trauma that homosexual students face—and
to push for anti-free speech and religion policies that will punish
those who speak out against homosexuality.

To learn more about the radical GLSEN agenda, read our Special Report at:
http://64.55.184.74/tvc1/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=15

Florida radio talk show host Steve Kane also maintains a web site that
exposes GLSEN's child recruitment efforts. Go to:
http://www.stevekaneshow.com/glsen.htm

Massachusetts News has also exposed GLSEN's perverted agenda. See:
http://www.massnews.com/apfist~1.htm

TVC has launched a "SPEAK UP for Traditional Values" day to encourage
Christian students to take the offensive against homosexual efforts to
silence free speech and religion. Order a "SPEAK UP" packet for $5 from
TVC and get your Christian student group involved in fighting for
freedom of speech and religion! Order from our Anaheim office:
100 S. Anaheim Blvd., Suite 350, Anaheim, CA 92805.

12. AMERICANS SEE RELIGION IN DECLINE BUT IMPORTANT
The Pew Research Center for the People & Religious Life just released
the results of a poll on what Americans think about religion. By a 2-1
margin, people said the 9-11 terrorist attack was the result of too
little religion in the world. More than one in six said religion was
very important in their lives, but 52% believe religion is in
decline—the same number who felt this way a year ago.

The poll also indicated that while the American public holds a generally
favorable view of Muslims in America, people were evenly divided about
Islam. Half said that Islam is no more likely than other religions to
encourage violence.

The survey also indicated that nearly half of Americans (48%) think that
the U.S. has had special protection from God for most of his history.
Nearly six in ten think the strength of American society is based on the
religious faith of its people.
