Each one has a unique flavor, but the story line itself is pretty timeless. Not sure why the story resonates with me so much; my wife and I are watching the 2014 version in parts in the mornings before work: we don't want to depress ourselves with the news1 :)

But 1977 was VERY GOOD and was the one we were most familiar with in 1994 when we put it on in high school.

ADDENDUM: Sorry, I meant we probably knew the most about the 1982 version on the big screen. I didn't realize 1977 was the première!

Fascinating, I was adopted at 2 years old in 1978. :)

I typically always will prefer theater over "hollywood" - although movie wise prefer 1982. In some cases Theater will translate to the screen when "hollywood" doesn't screw it up too much... always think of the travesty of the "A Chorus Line" movie - only hollywood could totally screw-up one of the greatest musicals of all time!

My "better half" is adopted as were her two brothers and sister, Blessings ...
