Things did seem simpler.
I loved the 80s. We still had the farm and yet had fairly new and quality equipment. I am probably the only boy who ever wanted a jacked up 4x4 and a black and gold Trans Am like smokey and the bandits at the same time. lol

Its alarming how much technology has taken over our lives. I remember when we still used rotary phones, lol, and that was long ago, in a land far far away...
I still use a flip phone that has that classic ringtone.
I go kicking and screaming into the 21st century.

The first time my grandmother crossed the United States was in 1883 in a Conestoga wagon, from St. Louis to Denver. It took 5 months.

The last time was in 1967 in a Boeing 707. It took 5 hours.

Now THAT is a contrast!

My first telephone was the "stalk" and you placed a call by picking up the receiver/ear piece and the operator would say "Number, please." "64 Ring 2, please." Or "420-L, please" and the operator would connect you.

It's getting better. My phone learns when not to disturb me
by when I put it down. And it's better every year about that.
I don't let it take over anything. I control it.

Technology seems to have stolen something from us, IMO. I cant quite put my finger on it though.

It will improve. You will be able to ask your phone to
screen people or call people or message them for you.
Mine does that reasonably well already.

You might be thinking of the two direction land line.
For important calls I use my landline becasue the mouthpiece
and earpiece are seperate, and you can hear breathing better.
The landline has much more intimate conversations where you
can hear and talk at the same time. With cell phones
your hearing channel cuts out when you talk.

I remember using two cans with a string.

The internet has changed everything, it seems.
