The Washington Redskins are reviewing their name. These other teams could be next
As America confronts racism more directly, sports teams with Native American names, mascots or logos are facing pressure to change away from ethnic stereotypes and caricatures.

Native American leaders have long criticized sports teams for relying on racist caricatures, stereotypes or, in the case of the NFL's Washington Redskins, an ethnic slur.
"If the leagues want to offer more than empty words in service of their profits, if they really want to live by the values they claim to have, they must ban Native mascots, team names, insensitive gestures and the subsequent racist behavior of fans," wrote Crystal Echo Hawk, founder and executive director of the native-led nonprofit organization IllumiNative.

How dare they stop using a racial slur as a football team name?!

How long before people try to justify using a slur? "It's an honor to have that name...", "According to this survey...", "Next thing you know they'll change the Oilers to the Titans!"

Why are they looking to change the name? The article mentions pressure from others. It doesn't say much about them of their own accord and morals wanting to change the name.

Washington plans to announce retirement of 'Redskins' franchise name on Monday, per report
The "thorough review" into Washington's team nickname that began on July 3 has concluded, and the franchise intends to announce Monday that it will retire the "Redskins" name, according to SportsBusiness Journal's Ben Fischer. The franchise has been called the "Redskins" since 1933, before it moved from Boston to Washington in 1937.

It is not known at this time what Washington will choose as its new nickname, but Mike Jones of USA Today reports that the franchise will also reveal a new team name on Monday morning. However, Fischer reports that Washington will not share any of that information on Monday because of pending trademark issues are preventing that from occurring in a timely fashion. Washington is planning to scrap all Native American imagery but would like to retain its original colors of burgundy and gold, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported earlier this week.
