Gaius layed on his back in his cell. When you had nothing to do for days and days, the ceiling became a place of interest.
Gaius had not been killed; he figured that they had more important people to arrest than a 60 year old man who wasn't much of a threat. The guard who had thrown him in here seemed very disinterested in him, and hurried through the arrest and jailing as if he were trying to hurry to get something else done. But they did make sure that he was in a cell that was fairly deep within the prison.
His cell was brightly lit; there was a window (or rather an opening) in the wall across from his cell. It made the cell somewhat comfortable. He could lie on the floor all day and listen to the birds outside. Other than what came through the window, things were pretty quiet. There was one other inmate in the cell next to his, and no guards anywhere nearby. Even though this was somewhat the high-security part, guards were not needed, because prisoners weren't let out. They didn't get exercise, and didn't have the strength to break out. If they could break out, they'd have to pass dozens of guards on their way out of the prison.
But Gaius wasn't concerned about the possibilities of a breakout.
A tray of bread was dropped down in front of his cell, with some water. The guard walked to the cell on the right, and gave the inmate there bread and water as well, and then walked off.
Gaius scooted up to the front of the cell to get the bread. He took a loaf, took a bite out of it, and rested his back against the wall, so he facing the other inmate's cell.
"Bread was baked today," Gaius said, and he took another bite from the warm bread.
"Not this one," the other inmate chuckled. Gaius saw the inmate's hand reach out to grab another one of his loafs. "But this one is." Gaius pictured the other inmate smiling, even though he didn't know what the other guy looked like.
A small piece of bread flew out from the other inmate's cell and landed by between the bars of the window, where a waiting bird grabbed it and flew off.
Gaius took his last loaf and layed back as he watched the bird fly into the rising dawn sun.
