Jesus answered, You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born,
and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness
to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.
Pilate replied to Him; What is truth? John 18:37, 38
The Lord does not respond to Pilate's question, for it is faulty as so stated.
The truth is not a "what", but a Who: the life-giving Spirit of Christ.
“The Truth shall set you free”.
The world loves to misquote scripture! How often we have heard
this statement being made in a variety of situations. In the 90’s,
some preachers tried to set this right by quoting: “And ye shall
know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Taking this one
step further, we can make an even more accurate statement if
we can get past the inclination towards paraphrasing.
John 8:
31 Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him,
If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed.
32 And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall
make you free.
Now we can get to the heart of the matter; “If you abide in My Word”.
The IF statements of scripture require us to come to know by experience,
not just from reading the Gospel, and can be a major stumbling block.
John 5:38 But you do not have His word abiding in you, because
whom He sent, Him you do not believe.
Therefore, all that the Spirit teaches in the Gospel of John and 1 John,
along with any other applicable use of abide=meno[G3306] will bring
a greater knowledge of truth in experiencing the One who is the Truth,
by abiding in the Holy Spirit of truth.
James 1:
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man
observing his natural face in a mirror;
24 for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets
what kind of man he was.
25 But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and abides therein,
and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work,
this one will be blessed in what he does.
