The worst catastrophe in China’s history, and one of the worst anywhere,
was the Great Famine of 1958 to 1962, and to this day the ruling Communist
Party has not fully acknowledged the degree to which it was a direct result
of the forcible herding of villagers into communes under the “Great Leap
Forward” that Chairman Mao launched in 1958.

Q. Are there any big food scandals going on right now in China?
A. Now we’re struggling with the issue of fakes eggs. They are nearly impossible to
distinguish before buying and far cheaper to make than real eggs are to lay. Fake
honey is also a problem. Testing revealed that 60 percent of the honey sold in stores
is not honey at all, merely coloured glucose water. Of course, fake honey from China
has been found in France and the U.S. as well.

What is "thick air?"
Pollution is so bad in parts of China that it creates pollution alert days downwind in South Korea and Japan. Iirc, some of them are so bad that it is recommended that people stay indoors.

They are:
  • Labour costs
  • Inconsistent laws
  • IP theft
  • Thick air

They believe their intellectual properties are more likely to be stolen in communist China
than anywhere else.

That's just a fact. "Stealing" ideas is part of national pride for them.
And laws do not protect intellectual property. It's how they grow.
