Arnold Schwarzenegger’s War on Gerrymandering Is Just Beginning

The former California governor helped support multiple ballot measures this year that will change how legislative districts are drawn. He already has his eye on more reforms in 2020.

Tuesday brought wins for independent redistricting commissions that Schwarzenegger backed in three of the four states where they were on the ballot—Michigan, Missouri, and Colorado, with Utah still counting, but also trending toward yes. Now the former California governor has begun planning a summit for advocates, donors, and the people behind some of the successful campaigns to brainstorm and build to more wins.

If he continues to knock down rigged districts in one state after another, the politics of division will come to an end.

As much as I support the idea, an "independent commission" leaves in the same place we are in now. That (supposedly) independent commission will be filled with political appointees. We are better off having districts composed of counties or contiguous counties whose boundaries do not change.

Here's the key; the California congressional delegation almost perfectly matches the relative number of republican and democrat voters.

Which is as fair as anyone could ask for.

There are some controls on who gets to be on the commission, and there are requirements for them when forming districts.

Edit: Iowa has a law that prevents politicians from even knowing what the commission is doing. It's an extreme case, but it's working fine there.

This movement is huge in terms of returning the United States to citizen control. So long as the politicians decide whose vote should count, we're just subjects. When the states prevent Gerrymandering, the power swings back to ordinary Americans.

And it's coming.
