Edit: Blush is no longer available on Apple TV. It might be later on. After all, Wolfwalkers disappeared from Apple TV and has not appeared again.

The promo slide for “Blush” looks like it is a light-hearted children’s cartoon. And it does have that animation style. But if you go to the end credits first, you see that it is a tribute and memorial by the writer and director, Joe Mateo, for his wife, Mary Ann R. Mateo. If you just Google her full name you will see the obituaries for her and how she died of cancer in 2017 at age 45. The end credits show her and their two children. With that in mind, the short film is seen as representing their life from the perspective of Joe, who is represented by a horticultural astronaut who crashes on a very small world. If you have access to Apple TV+ (like, say, to watch “Foundation”…), this 10-minute film is worth the watch. Joe’s wife is represented in the film as someone who came into his life and literally gave oxygen to his world. And when she dies and Joe’s character can’t breathe anymore, it is their two children who show that they too have the gift of enabling life. The symbolism with their role in the real world in helping endure grief is obvious.
