Shalom all,
When G-d flooded the earth in the days of Noah did it rain for forty days and only forty days. Or after reading the whole story does it lead one to believe that it rained for 150 days before the rains stopped and the waters abated.
In Gen. 7:4 G-d says he will make it rain for forty days and forty nights
Gen 7:4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I destroy from off the face of the earth.
G-d never says that this is all of the rain that he will bring.
In Gen. 7:6 it tells us Noahs age was 600 years old
Gen 7:6 And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
In Gen. 7:7 it tells us Noah went in to the Ark because of the flood
Gen 7:7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.
In Gen. 7:11 it tells us the flood started and Noahs age at that time.
Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Gen 7:10 tells us again that it rains for forty days.
Gen 7:12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
7:13-it tells us that G-d shut Noah and his Family in and in verse 17-18 it tells us that it continued to rain.
Gen 7:17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth.
Gen 7:18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters.
In 7:11 and 8:4 it tells us that there were 5 months between the start of the flood and the grounding of the Ark.
Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
Gen 8:4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
7:24 and 8:1-3 specifies that time was 150 days giving us a calendar of 30 days per month. Notice that in verse 1 and 2 G-d stops the rain after 150 days.
Gen 7:24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days.
Gen 8:1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;
Gen 8:2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;
Gen 8:3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.
Now that we know how many days the rains lasted, we can take that many days and add it to the days that the Ark rested and the time it took to see the top of the mountain which is in 8:4-5 giving us 74 more days.
Gen 8:4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.
Gen 8:5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.
This gives us a total time so far of 224 days that Noah and his family are in the Ark.
150 + 74 = 224
Noah waited another forty days and released the raven
Gen 8:6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:
Gen 8:7 And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.
Now we have a total of 264 days that they are in the Ark
224 + 40 = 264 = the eleventh month, the eleventh day of the month
Now we have to look at Gen 8:8-12 to see that every seven days consecutively Noah sent out a dove three times, giving us 21 more days to add to our total that Noah was in the Ark.
Gen 8:8 Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;
Gen 8:9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.
Gen 8:10 And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;
Gen 8:11 And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf plucked off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.
Gen 8:12 And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.
264 + 21 = 285 = the twelve month, second day of the month
New years day 29 days later, the waters began to dry up in 8:13
Gen 8:13 And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.
285 + 29 = 314 days Noah is now in the Ark
Another 57 days for the ground to be completely dried out by the twenty seventh day of the second month in 8:14.
Gen 8:14 And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.
314 + 57 = 371
This gives us a total of 371 days or 12 months 11 days that Noah and his family were in the Ark until G-d let them come out.
Now we take Noahs age at the start of the flood in 7:11, add to that, when he looked out of the Ark in 8:13 an we see that 314 days have gone by. Add to that the 57 days that it took until the earth was completely dry in 8:14 and we have the same amount of time as when we took it day by day. 371 days or 12 months 11 days
Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
