The Philosophy of Advertisement. Everybody in our world is promoting something. Everybody :)

How can anybody make a rational decision when "they" understand our minds better than we do and "they" are selling something? How do we test that reality to see what is real? Religion is selling God, and God and religion is only one commodity that folks are attempting to sell. :)

How do we test stuff? How do we as consumers make an educated decision? And if we consider religion, also a decision as a consumer :) ?

    anybody?

We should treat claims with skepticism.

More so when the claimant has something to gain by selling us something.

I avoid TV commercials like the plague - I usually have the clicker in my hand and will flip as soon as they start - I just dont' want to hear their spin on what they're selling. I'd rather make an informed decision before making any purchase. That said, I'm not above advertising myself - see signature lol ;)

In present times people will often take a scientistic attitude towards epistemology, ie think that the methods and procedures of empirical science are the best way of attaining knowledge about the world. And they are right, but only insofar as the field of enquiry is amenable to scientific investigation.

Husserl, the famous phenomenologist, once commented:

"We would be in a nasty position indeed if empirical science were the only kind of science possible."

My wife and I prerecord everything so we do not have to watch the commercials, I love modern science for that ability.

Suzy, based on my experience with advertising, you would be good at it!

And Suzy, I have been wanting to ask you if it would be possible to go through "moderator training" without actually becoming a moderator? In my cased I think that it would help me to be a better message board user/participant.

My gift to science is the "theoretical", you come to a road block and explain a little bit to me what you are doing :) and I will give you some interesting directions to look into to solve your road block. To me doing the grunt work is boring :) .

This goes way back, but have you ever seen any old magazine ads for Packard cars? Their slogan was "Ask the man who owns one." Even though they went out of business, I think that's the best way to educate yourself about a product. Try to find people who've used it, and know about it, and ask them.

Did they go out of business because people actually "ask[ed] the man who owns one"?

    Err, get an education? :p
Or rely on those who have so long as they are independent.
What do you think religion is trying to sell you?

Do they make money off of selling you the product? If they do not, then your suggestion is an awesome suggestion! :)

And of course we did have the Studebaker, it was a good solid dependable car and yet it went down the pike anyway :) .

    What?
You implied in your OP that religion is trying to sell something. I was just wondering what you think it is selling.

I'm educated enough to be sceptical of advertising claims.

Advertising is actually gold mining at play. Rich folk already have a gold mine and just want to make it bigger :) .

There ain't no begging to it, only poor people beg. And maybe those attempting to make money off of the rich. At least the new rich :) "A fool and his money are soon parted." Old rich do not loose their money :) !
